Show A WORD PICTURE OF THE DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE GREAT SAN JUAN editors note the following article is a reprint from the december 28 26 1929 issue of the san juan record the article we feel is worth the time and effort to reprint BLUFF UTAH the little town of bluff located on the banks of the san juan river in the extreme south end of the county is the oldest settlement in this part of the state it was located by a company of hardy pioneers of the mormon church until the ear early ly eighties and from there radiated the settlers w who ho first took up lands and began the first settlements of other par parts t 3 of the county the altitude at aluf is teet feet and its situation makes it ideal for the growing of fruits of all kinds outside of the torrid zone it was here that the beginning of the livestock business n ess of the county was entered into an industry which made its inhabitants wealthy and from here they planned and fostered the building of the communities muni ties that came after until the far reaches of the vast surrounding cou country ritty absorbed almost all of the sons and daugh of the original inhabitants bluff is unique in that it is now supplied with water from artesian art isian wells the water of which are the most pure of any in the world being so free from any foreign ingredients that they are even used for auto batteries these wells now furnish most of the irrigation water for the homes and gardens of the town having replaced much of the irrigation water from the river th the e town ii lies es 3 at t the entrance to the enchanted land known as monument valley whose wierd and stupendous carvings of nature have been the theme ot of many an artist and storywriter story writer and whose extensive valleys and rolling prairies support hundreds of indians with their hocks flocks of sheep and herds of horses from here the geologist the archa and all who have the urge to study freaks of the earths formations prehistoric man i or those who just wish to wish 1 to find a landt different from what they are acquainted with may make occur excursions into the unknown returning wh when en their wanderings have satisfied their cravings clavings cravi to the comforts of town and home as modern modem as any they have left |
