Show A GOOD WORD WILL ething that never ceases to annoy at least it is ia so with this writer is the degree to which the feeling between neighboring towns is carried from certain people in monticello one would get the impression that nothing e in blanding is capable of any good and that the inhabitants ar are e small bigoted narrow minded people who are ever on the alert for an opportunity to knife their monticello neighbors and take from them their rightful dues conversely some of the blanding people would have you believe that anything desirable is so far removed from monticello that they are willing and quick to condemn anything if it originates in there whether it bo be person or inanimate object hardly a day passes but what this feeling is expressed in one quarter or another other by one or the other protagonist almost buried in the recesses of our memory is the story of two men who for years were mortal enemies some turn of events caused one of them to see the futility and the enmity that had grown to poison their systems an was avas presented for the one havin having seen the light to say something good of I lis ilis erstwhile enemy in fact fac t under the circumstances he could not do otherwise than praise the man whom lie had delighted in defaming for so many years although the things he said were uttered grudgingly the resultant frame of n mind was so pleasant that lie repeated it by way of an experiment some of the good things that were said about him eventually found their way to the second man ile he could hardly disagree and lie he could not be consistent consi stant in his agreement without acknowledging something thin g good of the man who had made the first friendly overture before long they were viding with each other in their eulogistic accounts of each other Is there a lesson in this story for these two fine towns composed as they are of these very fine people each of us has true and fast friends in both towns each of ns stands to gain by recognizing the good that can be found in the other town jovn and lauding flauding the fine accomplishments of the other group of people faultfinding and cri of our neighbors is a reflection on those who indulge in this practice children in their forthright way have hit upon the truth when they say you call me goes back on you double this is what actually happens by our own words we label ourselves as noble understanding people or as narrow selfish individuals |
