Show WEEKLY MUMS fl MALYS landlords association fis rebels against rent curb bills russians set up sui six nation mation council to combat EIRP aid EDITORS NOTE when opinions iGns are expressed in these columns icicy aticy are those of western newspaper unions union s analysts and not necessarily ol of this newspaper REBELLION among landlords chest out muscles flexed truculent of attitude members of the american property owners association in 20 cities threatened wholesale eviction of tenants in protest against rental control bills now in congress on gress AN OFFICIAL of the organization composed chiefly of owners of small property said in tulsa okla BOO to 1000 eviction notices would be mailed to tulsa tenants advising them to vacate within 60 days similar action he said was expected in chicago houston kansas city detroit st louis fort wayne grand rapids danville ill and other cities the evict eviction fon notices affected rent controlled housing and included houses and apartments business units are not under rent control SPEAR HEADING the tulsa movement was a retired baptist minister the rev wallace J murphy executive secretary of the member tulsa property owners organization and an honorary president of the national association the rev murphy termed two rent control bills now before congress intolerable and said we refuse to operate so long as rental controls are on owner of considerable property in tulsa the retired clergyman asserted we dont intend to serve under slavery which would take away the right to control our property it is not enough that we must rent our property at a loss now they want to tine fine us and put us in jail landlords appeared mainly incensed because pending rent curb measures would be giving the federal housing expediter right to control evictions extend rent control periods provide triple damages for overcharges over charges on rent and permit fines up to and a year in jail tor for convicted violators OBSERVERS WONDERED it if landlords letting their wrath becloud their judgment for under existing law which expire until late march landlords area are prohibited from doing exactly what the rev murphy and his associates plan to do the tulsa incident was merely fuel to the flame of belief that if rent curbs are not maintained the question of housing far for those who cannot afford to buy homes would woud become even more difficult than it is at present RUSSIANS coming to taw joe stalin and the politburo so long and so vocally derisive of everything the western world has or offers were subconsciously paying that world the sincerest form of flattery imitation the russians had come forth with their own version of ERP alphabetical symbol of the marshall plan for aid to europe AS THE answer to the european recovery plan russia had organized the the economic council of mutual assistance for cooperation with five of her neighbors bulgaria czechoslovakia hungary poland and romania the purpose as outlined from moscow was the exchange of experience peri ence in the economic field the rendering of technical assistance to each other and the rendering ol of mutual assistance in regard to raw materials foodstuffs equipment etc russia with her vast re sources obviously was to be the key nation in the council the kremlin held the door open to ither nations the announce announcement meni aid other countries of europe that share the principles ot of the council and wish to participate in broad economic cooperation with the aforementioned countries may join THAT MOSCOW was considering the marshall plan when its six na tion council was formed was evident in a russian charge that the ERP interfered with the sovereignty of nations and that the U S britain and certain other countries of western europe were boycotting the six nations in trade SURPLUSES curbs are sought fearful of large surpluses of wheat and cotton the government was studying moves to prevent this contingency secretary of agriculture charles brannan outlined to a senate agriculture committee plans to hold down this years cotton and wheat crops brannons Br annons plan called for serving notice on wheat and cotton farmers that the 1919 1949 crops they plant will not be considered part of their average production in figuring any future acreage allotments this means growers could plant fewer acres without being penalized later by proportionate acreage carbs on their crops under present law if acreage controls are renewed the average acreage planted by a farmer in the five previous years is the amount he is entitled to plant many officials felt that might induce many farmers to plant as much as they can in order to have the maximum possible acreage when and it if controls are clamped on brannann Bran nans plan assuring the farmer of no restrictive penalties through curtailment of acreage was seen as a possible curb on any excessive planting about as large a winter wheat crop as possible already has been planted and a committee member declared cotton farmers are preparing to plant an extra large crop to get benefit of present high support prices PEACE DOVE hovers in east hovering wings ot of the dove of peace were becoming faintly audible in the holy land dispute israll israil and egypt signed a permanent cease fire order and armistice talks were still going on after recent difficulties THERE WERE even more significant ant developments looking toward final peace in the long controversy stemming from the partition ot of the holy land to make the area available as a place of settlement and nationalization of jews great britain had capitulated and with the british lion on its side the new nation of israel had the two most powerful nations in the world committed to its support other nations were falling failing in line to recognize the jewish state indications were that with the trend apparently fully in motion arab opponents to the israeli state would soon be standing completely alone in their opposition SHOULD THAT condition eventuate israeli seemingly would have nothing to tear fear inasmuch as its armies already have proven a match for arab forces bible students and others religiously inclined would be quick to see in the developments the beginning of fulfillment of the old prophecy that the holy land would one day be returned to the jews that they would one day become a nation again with their own flag their own land their own government ROCKETS bigger better when the buck rogers era Is really at hand the united states will be out in front or know the reason why by 1932 1952 according to estimates 40 cents ot of every dollar spent by this nation on military devices or supplies will be used in research work looking toward world supremacy in ocean spanning rocket weapons this estimate comes from military scientists who are in position to know the trend of thinking in the arms research field in mentioning the fact that guided missiles might account for almost half of military expenditures within the next few years the scientists point out that this does not necessarily mean rockets capable of pinpointing a target on another continent will be perfected by then but in that time they hope they will have improved materially the propulsion and guiding equipment already in use IN ADDITION to the spectacular experiments with high altitude V 2 type rockets at white sands N M the military is working on improvement pro of s shorter h 0 r t e r range missiles among them are experiments being conducted by the navy off point augu calif with buzz bombs launched from submarines although the missiles now are apparently patently ly launched when the submarine is surfaced the ultimate objective is to develop a method for launching the flying rockets while a submarine is concealed beneath the surface but able to track and steer the rocket by radar and radio BIG BROTHER cost ost going up americas role of big ig brother to the world was running into astronomical trono mical figures with no letup in sight speculation was that congress might be asked to back up president Tr bold new program to develop the worlds backward areas with an appropriation of a billion dollars THIS MONEY proponents of the plan explained would be available for loans by this government to foreign countries that join in in a plan tor for coordinated development of their national resources the decision to seek this money was not definite it was emphasized but there was no doubt the idea represented the thinking of high adm administration 1 n 1 officials who are looking for a way to translate the truman plan into action secretary of the treasury snyder has disclosed that work is going forward on a series of far reaching programs involving financial assis tance for other countries of the world beyond that he gave no details in other administration quarters it was said one course being seriously weighed called for joint action by four so sources arces this government the world bank the foreign country to be helped and private american capital AT THE INITIAL stage the emphasis was solely on loans which must be repaid but with the history of american financial assistance to countries overseas being what it is skeptics could look with little enthusiasm thusia sm on that phase of procedure no little emphasis was being put on the role american capital would be expected to play in implementing the bold new program with details to be outlined in advance through a comprehensive survey of areas to be assisted HAY LIFT new operation the berlin airlift was beginning to pay off in visible fashion the techniques the know how acquired by american fliers winging supplies to the reich capital via an air corridor were being put to use in an important fashion right here in the united states it might have been caleli operation since that is exann exact what it was but this time it w wa 1 the C 82 type of plane being used and hay was the chief cargo THE EMERGENCY move was in the battle for relief of snowbound humans and cattle in the nations hard hit rangelands president truman made available in emergency funds and 17 air force C began operations designed to feed two million snowbound sheep and cattle fifty thousand dollars was allocated to the bureau of indian affairs for use in relieving the hardship of thousands of indians on western reservations tons of hay were carried by the planes into ely nev with each ot of the flying boxcars carrying about five tons of hay fa P meanwhile from Harrods bur ky came a suggestion for a permanent airlift for emergency feeding of stricken livestock it wis was made by the kentucky livestock farmers association and proposed a red cross for animals in a message to the secretary of agriculture JACKSON DAY million or more happy harry truman had haci pulled himself up by his own boot straps grasped the dark cloud ot of D democratic mo cratic gloom and ripped it asi aside de to disclose a satisfying silver lining and now party big wigs and adherents are smiling expansively la in anticipation of hacking the million dollar mark when the traditional a plate jackson day dinners are held in february NOTHING SUCCEEDS like success truman might have reminded his followers and because of his personal success money which was woefully lacking in democratic party coffers before the election is ii now expected to come rolling in normally anywhere from to is raised for the party at the dinners but this year the national committee thinks it can surpass that figure and come neamir nearer the million dollar mark and they well may do it for many people who wanted no part of harry truman during the campaign and who kept their hands in their pockets now are willing to give and give generously however careful planning is going into this years jackson day dinner project one such dinner will be held in every congressional district of the larger states and at least one dinner in each of the smaller ones plans already have been map to seat an all time high re record c 0 ape at the washington dinner of course there are still some lukewarm wednesday democrats a committee said but the financial return this year should be terrific regulation W Is irksome was federal regulation W R gumming up the automobile retail business PLENTY AUTO dealers claimed it was claimed its 18 month pay out period on car purchases was driving the average buyer out of the market the regulation was tough it meant that buyers of even the smallest cars on a time
