Show A centennial story of southern utah lets guard what Is left by ff 11 earl rhinehard Rhine Rhin harf chart district conservationist CHAPTER panguitch hillsdale hatch spry the early agricultural people settling warm lands to the south gave very little thought to settling the colder sevier valley john D lee in 1852 called attention to the fertile lands at the mouths of panguitch mammoth and asa creeks in 1864 six families from paro wan and beaver crossed the mountain and camped near the mouth of panguitch creek they found region where plenty of irrigation water was available and larg areas of meadows suited for farm ing figuring that this was a pret ty good place to settle they es cs a town called fairview the present panguitch they con strutted ted irrigation ditches and planted a small crop during the winter 1864 65 when snow blocked the trail to parowan carowan the community was forced to subsist on boiled grain and flour flou ground in coffee mills fear of caused them to have to live in a stockade and they abandoned fairview in 1866 in march 1871 the colonists returned to panguitch in 1880 the census was panguitch now boasts over 2000 inhabitants pan aitch E is the indian word for fish panguitch in late years is important as a supply point along the utah arizona highway and is the gateway to beautiful bryce canyon its acres of irrigated lands comprise a part of the upper sevier soil conservation district upon which conservation farming is getting a start it serves as a commercial center and serves a larger area than any other town in southern utah after panguitch was first settled colonists began searching for suitable farm lands farther up the sevier valley which would be made available for irrigation G D wilson leading a group of 15 families in 1871 settled a river terrace along the sevier thus founding hillsdale this town was about half a mile east of its present site ten families 70 people in 1872 settled the town of aaron near the mouth of asay creek during this same year settlements were started at the mouth of mammoth homes were selected in hillsdale proctor John mammoth castle and other tribu baries of the sevier river several settlements along the sevier consolidated in 1880 and grouped together at hatch town the town after consolidation had about people and was located at the mouth of mammoth creek because of difficulties in keeping water in irrigation ditches and flooding of the settlement from its water supply reservoir the town moved to its present location in 1900 to 1902 in the same manner farmers north and east of panguitch established homes in casto red lime kiln and sanford canyons and at the the wide meadows along the sevier spry originally called orton consists of a group of farms and homes about ten miles north of panguitch in 1900 there were people livingst livi ngat spry in 1940 there were 87 |
