| Show the old settler 11 my dear san Jua ners I 1 the taxpayer pays ta taxes es and howls it is more easy to howl than to pay and the tax system develops chronic howlers bowlers how lers we howl about the misuses and abuses of bublis funds and point out how it i ought ought to be done but its like the I 1 I 1 weather of which every everybody bod y is I 1 talking but nobody doing doing a blame 1 thing P I 1 when we take it carefully into account it is really surprising that there is an important investment to which we add our deposit every year and then adopt no sane nor systematic measures for the success I 1 of that investment instead of making any rational effort forthe for the I 1 safety and success of the one investment wh ch h we are most sure of all to add to every year we I 1 content ourselves with the foolish and futile old custom of lamenting I 1 because it go the way it shod i we just take it for granted that when the money goes out of our hands it is for the county or state officials to squander it as they will we can take account of their extravagance injustice or downright dishonesty and can weep about it but we know our tears are shed in vain down in nebraska they have seen the folly of this kind of tears and are doing things about which it is refreshing to hear they have a taxpayers association which has put the spenders of public money right on the spot and yet the association is by no means a belligerent affair hectoring hectorina hec an and annoying men in office but i it Is is operative cooperative co and helpful not only dking do ing the thing that has to be done but leaving a good taste in the mouths of everybody concerned it has wiped an accumulation of old debts off the books brought system and order into the operations of the government and is is giving the country more out of fewer tax dollars than they ever had in the past the very thing we need badly in san juan some enterprising citizen preferably of the female emale persuasion should take the initial step and there will be an avenue opened for all this energy which hitherto has been lost in howls which floated away to no purpose on the desert air in the readers digest for july under the heading greater value for fewer tax dollars there is an account of some 0 of the good things the taxpayers association has done down in nebraska read it that is what we ought to be 1 doing here ALBERT R LYMAN |
