| Show important matters before congress two major pieces of legislation have been before congress for the last two weeks these proposals are of utmost importance entire country they have to do mainly with the transition from wartime war time to peacetime peace time A bill passed by the senate deals with unemployment compensation of civilian employees who have been working in war plan plants ts the greatest difference of opi opinion nion was whether or not iia the several states or the federal government should administer the law As the bill finally passed the authority for the laws administration would rest in the hands of the several states with the federal government insuring the unemployment fund of a state if it were found necessary to do so this bill as passed by the senate has since been referred to the house ways and means committee where athas it has been drastically amended and it will no doubt pass the house materially different from the original senate version the other piece of legislation HR known as the colmer bill has to do with the disposal of surplus property ranging all the way from food to war plants the main controversy in this legislation was whether or not it should be administered by a single administrator or a board As the legislation passed the house it provided for a single administrator with an advisory board consisting of the heads of the cabinet as well as other agencies that have been set up to prosecute the war such as chairman of the war production board etc it is estimated that there will be about of surplus property to be disposed of and worth ot which will revert to civilians and for civilian consumption |
