Show boy scouts will participate in both worlds fairs the boy scouts of america will have an active part in the new york worlds fair and the golden gate international exposition at san francisco this year the th scouts participation at both fairs in 1939 was successful both from the standpoint of the boys and their leaders as well as in the judgment of the officials of the enterprises once again the movement will maintain its own boy scout service camp on a two acre site adjacent to the federal building at the new york fair here provisions are being made for scouts and shouters to camp each week living as boy scout troops with their own boy and adult leaders this represents an increase of ten campers per week last year scouts and their leaders lived at the new york worlds fair in a tented village of their own they came f from rom more inore than towns in 32 states the district of columbia and the canal zone their helpfulness to fair officials and fairgoers and their conduct won praise from many quarters the scouts combined their camping experience with an unsurpassed educational adventure seeing the numerous exhibits at close range and rubbing elbows figuratively speaking with persons from all over the world they became official ambassadors of the fair itself upon returning home many were guests of civic organizations to whom they told of their personal experiences at the largest fair the world has ever had I 1 continued on page eight boy scouts conti continued aued from page one each scout camper will devote about one third of his time in ome berv service ice app cita wah will no not t compete with those hose t seeking gainful employment last year the he scouts proved themselves almost 0 indispensable as guides it ir as s s ing school tea ea cheis who visited the he fair with children cl ch idren ildren during may and june Juns they also served as aides pt che he administrative office f for or the N na a ional advisory Ad viory committee at fi st ai aid d stations in the press and treasury off offices ces the special events department and such exhibits as he state pavilions temple of religion il medicine and public health and the childrens world they were ushers ord orderlies erlice color fuai da and gu guards ard 3 f c r special programs for foreign government groups perhaps the grea esi confori coniri aution made by them was their information to visitors whether on or off duty each scout camp sr r was given an espe prepared mip map of the fair F air and information that enabled him to be helpful to tho thoe e seeking assistance many scouts wrote enthusiastic letters commenting on their experiences perien ces cG one from tennessee who had never been to any large city before said that was a thrill in itself but felt that the privilege of meeting big people and executives was a truly great experience peri ence later he added 1 I have had the privilege of making four our or five different different talks about my trip and writing not less than eight or ten news newspaper articles about it A pittsburgh pa sout wrote that the trip to the fair and the opportunity of living a week inside the fair grounds has been the greatest experience of my life the fair looked like a fairyland at night one week at the fair can educate a person more than months of hard study another scout from greenville S C said the experience gave him a 9 great reat source of satisfaction to know that we were rendering in a real service to the public to the world of tomorrow and to So scouting at both fairs the boy bouts of america will maintain displays of handicraft woodcraft nature and by scouts and shouters from all over the P country while there will not be a scout camp at the golden gate exposition scouts of western states will be invited to attend the exposition and man their exhibit beach each scout will pay his own transportation and a moderate fee for his share of food and other expenses at both expositions once again scouts will be accepted for he new york worlds fair scout service camp during school sessions in may june september and october only where they have the approval of local school authorities aies covering their five day absences scout officials also announced that consideration is being given to special boy scout days at both fairs boy scout day at the new york worlds fair last june 29 brought together boy scouts and shouters the largest number of scouts ever assembled anywhere in the world more than scouts and leaders took part in boy scout day at the golden gate exposition last august 3 boy scouts and their leaders interested te in participating in the boy scout service camp at the new york worlds fair which opens may 11 and closes oct 27 or the golden gate exposition in san francisco from may alay 25 to sept 29 should inquire of their local boy scout councils for further particulars V |
