| Show the old settler written in salt lake city my dear san Jua ners it seems to be generally conceded that a prophet is to expect no honor in his own country it must also be conceded that it is suicidal for a country to repudiate its prophets and its seers I 1 am not employing these terms in their common ecclesiastical usage the prophets and seers I 1 have in mind are not essentially senti ally men of supernatural Euper natural ision n they are simply forward looking individuals that are to be found in all normal healthy communities muni ties especially in new countries they are the see ers who discern the possibilities of growth and progress and try to make these opportunities clear to the understanding of their fellows the country without these see eru ersi makes no progress it is like the flock of sheep without the good bellwether bell wether to lead into new pastures and the flock starves and deteriorates on the over grazed range there is a stubborn passion of human pride human jealousy or simply human cussedness that refuses to recognize any superior power of discernment in tom or in bill they are just ordinary clodhoppers clod hoppers their limitations and failures are too well known to admit them a place among the prophets every fellow thinks himself more deserving than tom and bill of the honor and if he cant have it he wont accord it to someone else san juan has its prophets whatever their individuals may be and these prophets must be allowed some recognition even in their own country if the country is ever to come into its own whether it is to be tom and bill or someone even less popular I 1 propose in this and in other articles to follow to name some of these prophets and point out the worth of their message what I 1 said a week ago was preliminary to what I 1 want to say now one of the seers of san juan has pointed out that there is a stream of shining cash flowing towards the county from the east but before it crosses the line it is deflected to other places far away he has pointed out too that on the west side another chinin shinin shining stream is also shunted from ilg its start towards san juan and scatters to distant places then he has pointed out how a channel can be opened to catch the major flow of these two streams and have them deposit some of their rich sediment in the country aorl for which he is working continued on page four the old settler continued from first page that see er is zeke johnson and the thing that he sees should be accorded at least as much credit by the people of the county a as his biscuits are accorded ty the tourist public he began a number of years ago to work for a park to park highway connecting mesa verde on the east of the county with the scenic centers of utah on the west of the county if the tens of thousands of tourist cars that turn back each year from the borders of the county on each side were made to come on straight through it would be very much to their satisfaction and it would give new life to the industries of the county and create more industry it would be success in a bigger way than can ever be achieved by the separate efforts of many individuals yours for the success of san juan ALBERT R LYMAN |
