newark evening news in monticello we have just such a club as the one suggested for girls entering their teens and we recall organizing a junior club for girls from 12 to 16 back in our home state patterned after the state junior clubs so we well know the value of such organization read what myrtle meyer eldred has to say on the subject mary is so queer and unhappy these days marys mother told an intimate friend what do you do with a girl of 12 she is too young to go a round around with boy and girl groups and yet she interested te in sharing our fun as she used to be and ashes so terribly cross and snappy and hard to get along with she seems like a stranger and I 1 just lose patience with her does she have a crowd of girls to go with or a group doing special things learning to sew or write or paint or garden or read good books together asked her f friend no she her best girl chum moved away this summer and she has been at loose ends ever since I 1 wonder if that would be a solution it might make her happier than now I 1 think ill suggest it to ker clubs help at 10 to 13 years of age girls are too old to be treated like children and too young to be treated as adults its a fine time for girls to join character building organizations and learn how to be loyal friends good citizens and how to do things with their hands and their minds the ceremonies of such organizations zat ions the secret words the badges of achievement the comradeship rade ship of other girls with similar interests all satisfy a childs child need to feel that he or she belong somewhere and to develop into an individual of some personal distinction it enough for a mother to recognize that her daughter is crogg and unhappy she should oe concerned enough to do something about it if she cannot interest her daughter or son for that matter in definite groups designed to satisfy the childs immediate social needs she should bestir herself to gather some like minded girls from the neighborhood and set them to reading and reviewing viewing xe good books studying art or science or working at some sewing or knitting or croche crocheting as a group A club a gang a crowd its activities guided by some older person wise in the ways of children childen fulfills a childs need to find companionship and interesting recreation with persons of his or her own sex these groups mark the transition period between dependent childhood and a more independent adolescence when a girl or boy will know their way around and be searching for recreation and association with members of both sexes the following suggestion is a variation of the apple race and may be included in that halloween party you are planning for the young folks large apples with long stems are used for this novel race A basket of apples is placed at one en end d of the room four players may enter this race at the same time depending on the size of the room at a given signal from the leader each one must pick up an apple by the stem with his teeth and carry it in his mouth across the room and deposit it in an empty dish or pan provided for each contestant and the person who is able to get the greatest number of apples in his dish a cross across the room wins a p prize if a player drops an apple he must stop and pick it up with his teeth not with his hands which should be kept behind him I 1 R R S denver speaking of halloween brings to mind the summer haze we see on occasion as we look toward our mountains and the vast space to the south and west although meteorologists explain indian summer as a stagnated high pressure area the indian explains this warm period of the fall by a legend which runs something like this after a summer of growing season the wideawake wide awake indian farmer starts harvesting as soon as his crops are ripe but as with all people some indian farmers put off doing job until tomorrow while the busy ones work the lazy farmer says to himself it is still a long time until cold weather comes then the great spirit sends jack frost to stir up the lazybones lazybones lazy bones prays to the great spirit to give him another chance and then the great spirit sends what the paleface pale face calls indian dian summer but the red man calls it lazy farmers second chance how true are the following words of charles edward russell there is so much more to life than the accumulation of wealth and material possessions to make money is nothing most of the money makers I 1 have known were among the dullest of all gods creatures and led lives flatter than a stove lid to obtain office or position or distinction is nothing of all the men or women that fifty years ago had I 1 the public limelight lime lima light and t the he shouting hardly one still clings by so much as a shred to the human memory emory in to crowd and elbow your way to the summit of a profession is 13 nothing who remembers now the leading lawyers physicians preachers engineers of 50 years ago even to write literature is nothing the literary idols of one generation are the jest of the next and the pavement dust of the next well then what is there of a rational object in life as one rocks from bump to bump through tin s wild world beneath the sun isun looking at the matter calmly and judicially the one and ONLY purpose that seems to offer an endurable profit is to keep some step however stumbling however far in the rear with the vast silent often mysterious sometimes hardly discernible processes that are slowly and surely transforming f 0 the world from a wolves den aen to a condition where a man can know some peace some content some joy of living some sense of the inexhaustible beauties of the universe in which he has been placed any fresh cooked or leftover left over
