Show byrds feet again itch for desolate antarctic wastelands government sponsored expedition prepares to claim ore lands BOSTON late in september the veteran bear ot of oakland will head out ot of boston for points south very south admiral richard E byrd will be off again to the antarctic this time to claim for uncle sam several thousand square miles of ice covered land which he claims holds valuable coal iron and oil deposits financed by a congressional appropriation the expedition will use three government vessels including the bear of oakland the interior department ice vessel north star which carries supplies to alaskan outposts and the coast guard cutter northland based at oakland calif preparing the expedition besides admiral byrd are dr ernest H gruening director of the interior departments territorial division rear admiral russell R coast guard commandant capt charles C hartigan of the navy and hugh cumming state department expert on geography ol of the antarctic several bases may be established on the barren wastes which blanket the south polar region headquarters will probably be at little america base tor for two recent byrd expeditions dit ions and another base will be 1400 miles away in the vicinity of alexander land across the straits from cape horn A third party to be equipped with a giant snow cruiser capable of carrying a crew of men into the interior for a year may be planted somewhere in james W ellsworth land which lies between the two bases the snow cruiser being built at chicago by dr thomas E poulter will be 55 feet long and powered with diesel engines it will be tracked with endless tread wheels and in its spacious quarters four men can live comfortably tor for a year on its root will be lashed a small airplane for short jaunts into the wilderness i k k rear adm richard E byrd |
