Show pioneer celebration lives up to promises made for this years year s 0 fete draws large attendance and is pronounced biggest and best celebration in history of san juan county living up to the forecast of the celebration committee and officers of the blue mountain civic club which sponsored the affair the pioneer celebration and home far outshone any previous ete eaf of this kind in the history of san juan county neither labor nor expertise expense was spared and the show really emerged from small town to big time stuff the crowd was all that had been anticipated and was about all that monticello could care for with present facilities more specialty acts were provided than ever before with the result that dull waits were eliminated and there was something doing every minute K S summers secretary of the club and toastmaster and for the rodeo entertainments showed that lie he had real showmanship as well as s ability as a radio announcer he kept the tempo at a high pitch even if he had to appear on the track in person as he did in the potato race the civic club saddle horse race etc in which he be was at least a runner up if not the winner of first place celebration opens the celebration opened on friday july 21 with the raising of the flag at sunrise followed by a sunrise service on the county courthouse lawn consisting of community singing a piano solo by james mcconkie and other musical numbers william C wal ton was the principal speaker who commended the splendid work of the early pioneers there was a large crowd out and the program was listened to by residents for blocks around in the clear morning air the carnival concessions were on the job early in fact they commenced the evening before and continued until midnight main street was thronged thron ged with automo b keiwand d crowds milled about all efferent places of amusement first day of rodeo the first session of the rodeo opened friday at 2 p in with exhibition hibi tion riding and roping the first main event was a half mile race free for all for a purse of 30 for first place and one of 1250 for the second there were five entries and first prize was won by mcnulty and second by white sides in the ha half i mile race for two year olds for prizes of 20 and 10 four entered first was won by leon adams second by horace allred sam halls horse coming in third in the half mile boys pony race there idere were four entries robert S sil i kwon won first harold young sew relay and special races in the saddle horse relay race for purses of 17 and 8 wath four entries first place was won wol by leon adams second by keith halls an amusing event was the special relay horse mule and bicycle each running a distance of one sixth mile the purses were 10 and 5 clyde barton won fiert fai keith halls second the potato race on horseback brought in 13 entries and was a very animated and closely con 1 tested affair les young won the 10 prize and steve ellis the 5 in the bucking contest taking in in the two days of the rodeo there were nine entries each rider had to make one exhibition ride each day first money 1750 went to swede lewis second to fritz winters calf roping contest in this event the first prize was 10 second 5 j nine entries unlike the bucking horse exhibition the riders did not seem to have much luck most of the boys missed their calves and were out of the contest jack bajaro won first place in 37 seconds and george white in 45 wild cow milking contest in this contest there were in reality twomey two men to each entry for while the prize money was awarded to the first presenting a small bottle containing real milk to the judges stand he required the assistance of another man on horseback whose job it was to lasso the cow and hold her on a taut rope until the foot man could extract some milk from her udder and race with it to the judges stand these contests were very amusing and exciting the first day some of the men confronted the judges with the complaint that the cow they had drawn was dry and had no milk however first money was awarded this day to keith halls the day closed with a big get together dance in the high school auditorium the music being furnished by eddie carsons harlem hottentots Hotten tots a seven piece colored orchestra saturday morning at 1000 saturdays celebration b began e 9 a n with a fitting service in the chapel at 10 am a m commemorating the heroism of the early pioneers and paying homage to their hardihood and sacrifices A jay redd was the orator of the occasion and delivered a very eloquent and spirited address there were some very fine musical numbers and other worthwhile entertainment base ball game A good crowd of fans turned out to witness the ball game between the colorado bean pull u 1 ers and the blanding rangers on story on page four celebration continued fron from first page the high school field saturday morning for the first few innings the blanding nine held the game to a close score on both teams then the rangers must have been attracted by some stray bogies for by the time the game ended the score was 20 to 4 in favor of the bean pullers bullers Pul lers celebration continued from page four fight card draws fans there was a good crowd at the fight card in the high school gym the main event was between em bettt pittman and 1311 driscoll of moab although pittman was the days festivities closed with a big dance at the high school which was filled to capacity all ali in all the celebration was a pronounced success and while all the figures are not yet available it is predicted that there will be a modest surplus to go to the treasury of the civic club for further improvements it is already announced that there will be another celebration a year from now and the crowds at the rodeo were given a cordial invitation to be with us again |
