| Show VICTIMS OF THE PRICE AND PROFIT SYSTEM from time to time the editor of this paper has called attention to the maladjustments adjustments mal and iniquities of our present capitalistic system which based upon the existence of scarcity for the masses in order that the privileged class may possess far too much and resulting in the stimulation of dubious short cuts to wealth or gain has filled our renal institutions to the bursting point with victims of this sy system s and the legal net we are prone to think that virtually all the bad people who commit crimes are inmates of our prisons and that all those at large are guileless and guiltless such is not the edse case and as a matter of fact are hundreds of better men in prisons than many of tho those se who are still at large buethe crop of criminals whether apprehended or not is ever growing and increasing under this pernicious capitalistic system which has crowned money as king of the world made worldly possessions the only measure of a mans status and worth in society there are many fine characters behind prison doors who fey by chance tricks of fortune or unworthy associates have been overtaken in crime victims of a vicious and defenseless system and as a result are spending the best years of their lives behind bars this week we were privileged to read two letters from prisoners in san quentin prison both are young men both are educated and of high type who could grace any drawing room or probably render capable service in almost any business establishment we are not permitted to divulge their names but we are going to quote two or three paragraphs from their letters to a resident of this county we will refer to them merely as A and B mr A says there seems to be figuratively speaking as a result of my own analysis a deficiency in my intellectual diet your contribution seems to satisfy the neeland nee need dand and those pamphlets you sent me show me how I 1 can become useful more so than I 1 had ever hoped to be you mentioned in your letter and I 1 wonder if you do not actu actually ally know that my greatest problem is how to be useful in the capacity in which I 1 am in most ost able to serve I 1 am thirty years old very soony soon and have only benmore ten more months to spend here and to decide definitely what I 1 shall do with the remaining half of my life my indebtedness to you grows with each letter letier I 1 receive and my gratitude goes out to you and to mr M for all y you ou do for me 1 it is quite possible that I 1 may go out of here feeling that life is worth a struggle after all mr B says in part thank you very kindly for your thoughtful reply to my recent letter and request to you I 1 am so very grateful for all this material and I 1 want you to know that every bit of truth literature yota wish to send me at any time will be so appreciated by myself and others who will be fortunate enough to share my good fortune 1 I have found much happiness in my study and without it this trial would have been most too much for some who have not been accustomed to the finer things of life this would be just another experience but to me after years as a professional musician pipe organist and teacher of same and piano this truly has been an opportunity to demonstrate the wonders of metaphysics I 1 wonder how man can go on without an understanding of his oneness with our father truly we are fortunate and blessed we could quote more from these fine letters written behind the dismal walls of san quentin what the crimes crimes of the writers are we do not know but their letters indi andl cate that they are high type young men who are impressed by the finer things of life and in a reasonable and equitable society there is little likelihood that they would have teen been found outside the pale of the law men MUST have an opportunity in life a place in the social and economical setup where by the application of energy they can be honored and respected in the communities in which they reside it is time that men quit shutting their eyes to existing conditions and trends while orating upon the wonders of the system which has made america the greatest coun country on earth perhaps it is toda today y but it will not be for long unless we correct some of these maladjustments adjustments mal that have become so pronounced since the advent of the labor saving savine machines which work for a comparatively small group and deny jobs to the masses and since the advent of the interest octopus which has grown to such prodigious proportions since the betrayal of the people and the sale of their birthright to administer through the congress our monetary system thereby consigning the people to an economic slavery even worse than that of feudal times |
