Show exhibit at san francisco world exposition outlined sen and mrs will holmes of box elder county visit site on treasure island d discuss plans ka V SAN FRANCISCO mar 29 revealing that utah is planning an exhibit which will stress its scenic wonders and its historical background state sen W R holmes publisher of the brigham city daily journal and member of commission for the 1939 golden gate international exposition is here to confer with exposition off officials while plans are still in the formative stage said senator holmes the exposition may be assured that our exhibit will not smack of the commonplace the centerpiece of the utah exhibit will probably be a replica of the mormon tabernacle block at salt lake city three artists are now working on exhibit plans w wah the commission believes ate e into something r rey worthwhile exhibit will be housed in the great hall of western states a magnificent structure which will be one of the outstanding show places on treasure island the acre body of land dredged from san francisco bay as a site for the bests world fair utah has appropriated to participate in the golden gate international exposition and was the first state to pay in full for its space in the hall of western states utah continued sen holmes 94 sees in the bests world fair an opportunity of drawing world attention to its own wonders such as bryce canyon the bear river bird refuge the natural bridges and zion national park and we intend to take full advantage of that opportunity after inspecting treasure island in company with keith southard director of state participation senator holmes declared that in his opinion no finer site for a worlds fair could be found utahna Ut ahns he commented will be astounded at the sites size and beauty and the amazing progress that has been made in construction it will be a pleasure to report my findings at the next meeting of the utah commission speaking of conditions in his home state senator holmes reported that prospects for a bumper crop in utah this year are excellent cel lent particularly in box elder county his home community he also told of activities in two fields that heretofore have not been developed in utah californians may be interested to know he said that utah is going to harvest its first major crop of grapes this autumn experiments peri ments have shown that a grape can be grown in utah that cacote alje made into a very fine dry aw x even wider interest perhaps is that steps are now being taken to develop the asphalt deposits which lie beneath the great salt lake indications point to an inexhaustible supply of I 1 this material which can be utilized in many ways to mrs holmes who accompanied senator holmes here the exposition is of secondary interest her primary interest is her twin grandsons now 17 months olathe old the children of her daughter mrs L T jacobson of oakland |
