Show special S P ecial activities of home I 1 of truth and san luan juan lo co 1 HISTORY OF THE HOME OF TRUTH THE AUTISTIC ARTISTIC SIDE OF LIFE one of our privileges in the new form of life we have entered upon in our home of truth settlement is the continuance of our musical activities tivi ties which are carried on in a small way now but which will be enlarged upon in a number of ways when some of the more practical work is completed the writer was previously engaged in professional work in chicago 1 giving her full time and attention to vocal and piano students and served as accompanist in one of the large studio buildings at other periods but realizing the need to leave city life and environment and answering the call to begin life anew in the western land she left chicago in june 1934 and came to this more woore quiet place to serve in whatever way was outlined for her to do until the musical work could be resumed she was assigned certain duties which combined tea teaching ebing music as well as other academic subjects to the younger members during the fall and winter months and soon added some of the adult members who were eager to begin the study of voice this was the beginning or our ivusic al life in the community which also included assembly singing on su sunday and the midweek mid week service in the fall of 1933 arrangements 4 were made whereby the youngs theater building in monticello was purchased by the home of truth with i the idea of tran 9 19 1 a 9 building into a combination music alusic studio and general place like other well laid blans the work has been retarded although it will be continued a as conditions ampro P in a financial way and we are able to extend our work in monticello in the meantime certain repairs were made imade and in the summer of 1935 a part of the building was remodeled and two rooms set apar apart for a music studio and it has been used for this purpose ever since A number of voice and piano students have enrolled and are doing fine work not only in their r us nal efforts but through furnishing on rany occasions in monticello and towns special and concerts have been prepared and presented and these bring brine satisfaction to those taking part and to parents and the friends of the stu 1 dents our most recent program consist ed d of christmus songs gongs and this concert was given in the I 1 L D V S church in monticello on christmas eye eve and was repeated in our own chapel in dry valley a few days later with one of our adult members adding an attractive to the program almost everyone appreciates musi a as an art and as a means of social enjoyment but not so many people realize its value as a means of mental and spiritual development music like mathematics requires intense concentration of the mind but also trains the eye to see accurately the ear to hear with keenness and discrimination and a thorough student will find his capacity for pro progress gres in other lines of study greatly increased singing broadens the mind and sympathies develops poise and because of the deep and controlled breathing required reou ired increases bodily health and strength conscientious piano practice will help the student to become very quick and skillful IT in the use of his hands bands these are among them the many reasons why the writer feels eels a very reen keen interest in the musical development of our corner of this great and beautiful state of utah and why she tries to instill into the mind of student dent and parent alike the very great importance of devoting dev otine tine tin e to the study of piano and the cultivation of the voice during durin the earliest years of a childs life since since that which is is a part of the early life makes a great and lasting impression and aids in the development of the finer senses continued 4 special activities continued from first page it is also interesting to consider the possibility of learning music even without the much piano to practice on because there are so many things which may lie be taught to lo children thru blackboard illustration and paper and pencil As soon as our main building can be improved impi oved and our studio moved to its more permanent place at the rear of the building we intend to arrange for cass ceass work which will be a great incentive to our younger children and in fact to all ages since we way may also include more advanced work in in theory and the general study of this universal language elva sprague |
