onto solid pavement as we nye left the train and boarded street cais for foit snelling minnesota at the reception camp CAT IP at the fort A brand new experience for most of usi us eating a meal in ill the dreaded rod had bad bc been n administered and it as found to be completely painless and harmless the issue of clothing and equipment was another new experience sone of the clothing was not alto for long several companies were sent to minnesota camps to replace the mn men who had talen taken dischar discharges es and reduced the company strength about a hundred and sixty men N were bere rere left and it was rumored that this number would be sent west to a camp in california after listening to countless stories as lo 10 our destination dosti sti nation we finally boarded a train at seven one morning bound for thompsons Thomp sons utah definitely for fer utah the trip from minnesota linne sota to utah was an added experience that will not soon be forgotten n riding ridin all day after having been accustomed to an active existence was crain cramping pin not only physically physical lv but mentally as well at carrol iowa we were permitted to leave the alie train and RO go out for a brief run around the station grounds this as much appreciated and helped to make the trip really enley enjoyable able by the time the train reached Oni faha most moa of the men were fast asleep in the pullmans in fact it was no easy job to get every one out of bed in the morning western nebraska and kansas were uninteresting from a scenic point of view sunbaked sun baked prairies and wind drifted sand dunes deserted farms and dilapidated farmhouses even the smaller towns seemed to sulk at a mean trick of nature and appeared run down at the heel beel in striking contrast to this area were dairy ant and produce fairns of eastern colorado with a low lying mountain range on the western horizon gradually the mountains came into view until the snow capped top of pikes peak appeared to be directly ahead of the train the last fifty miles before reaching the rocky mountains seemed the ion longest est part pait of the trip colorado springs was beautiful against the tall hills which seemed so close but were in reality miles and miles away avay darkness had set in and mos of odthe the men had retired by the unit we entered tb the eRoyal royal doige some of were less sleepy remained regained awake unable to io sleep while in the presence prence 0 al 1 the magnificent irack rcck walled canyon necks were I 1 craved craned and eyes were strained rained Et in in the in nn an effort to distinguish between rock walls and st sty sky y it would be barly mornin morning before even a thread of sky were visible mile after mile the engine wheezed and pulled the th ler lens g 16 car train up the trades grades and we went to sleep late with thoughts of the huge prehistoric I 1 glacier that had made this magnificent monument of rock possible early morning found us in hot springs colorado a town well named if there ever was cne boiling water issued from the rocks and cooled as it ran down to join the river which had in some strange unexplained I 1 way hacked backed up during the night and was now flowing westward we had crossed the continental divide as we 1 slept at grand junction we were again agai in permitted to leave the train for a bit of leg stretching but wei e soon on our way again agabi traveling at a xe re mai kable rate of speed after the islow slow trip up the mountains the previous evening we saw what appeared to be a camp located near an orchard but observed at the same time that it could not have been a camo bacasse was still fruit hanging banging from thee trees I 1 in the orchard some seme distance un we noticed what evidently was a ti thain ain wreck boxcars were ilin aling 0 along the tt track ack and workmen were on the job repairing the damage we learned later that a merchandise train had bad run into trouble at that point during the night and wrecked several carloads of farm leaving colorado we vre were suddenly in the state of utah Sud suddenly dealy is the word the scenery the veay nt atmosphere mo sphere seemed to hange im mediately the small tarns and ranches disappeared and in their P place I 1 c e were rolling sand durics dunes and sometimes odd shaped rocks wind eroded into ranta fantastic pattern patter nature had added a touch 0 07 color to them to take away the ibe drab crab appearance appe ara and gave them beau beauty ty in spite of themselves thompsons Thomp sons utah ye god cods wa W this the place where we were about to be encamped lor for the coming tea eson on one side the tall bluffs and on the other an endless stretch of prairie and desert we were goo soon n disillusioned by the truck drivers who informed us in answer to a hundred and one questions that our future home was monticello If more than a hundred miles to the south followed then a v dusty anil thrill packed trip across the desert and down into a canyon over narrow winding mountain trails with wore scenery per square mile than we had bad ever experienced before in our entire lives now new we are at camp and mighty thankful to be located in so fa la irble a 1 spot the cli climate mateAs is wonderful the air while abile still a novelty seems to give a certain spring like feeling at each breath we learn frem letters letter fromi home in minnesota that blizzards b li are arc roaring 11 and snow is filling up roadways some towns are snowed in for the winter chile u bile herein here in utah we can work in our shirt sleeves and not be uncomfortable aliki ahil w shill miss the usual winter sports WP me will ill have added to our album orm kaoi ies ie that of having spent at least ole winter at a higher altitude anan ve vc have ever
