Show f aro a ro rn r fcc ucc jj PERSONAL OPINION C byl by elwyn blake nothing is accomplished all at once and so it is with the progress I 1 of our highways toward a perfect road ad system we have watched with interest the progress of a highway system in southeast utah i over a period of nearly 20 years 0 i in fact the writer helped turn ther the first dirt for a hi highway hway grade extending from monticello northward at first we were proud of the fact that we had a dirt grade thrown up most of the way between this town and moab later the road improvement program extended to the south toward blanding and to the east to the colorado line then came the gravel surface and the elimination of steep gradients and the shorten ing of the highway by elimination of 13 curves one important step is the shortening and straightening of a stretch of road about three and a half miles east of monticello at what is known as the vega crossing which is being compi completed eted this week with the exception of the final surfacing an important loop cop elimination in 0 our ur moab road is hoped for in the near future this would be at mule shoe bend we viewed the road improvement going on north of blanding anding BI early in the week in company with road engineer claud batty and are pleased to note the improvement being made there although weather conditions I 1 may necessitate temporary abandonment of the work soon if we can just keep up the good work until we at last have lave a good I 1 i oad load south to the arizona line and est eat to and beyond the na natural bridges perhaps we may rival that state of new mexico in reaping a golden harvest from the tourist trade our neighboring state received from the tourists la last t year and are going gain out after more bus business iniss I 1 this year thru extensive advertising they could not do it without the aid of good roads and they know it |
