Show THE OLD SETTLER by albert R lyman it would not be far from right to say that the higl highest kest and the lowest point in utah are in san juan county front from the ahe bald peaks of la sal above timber line to the low region where the colorado crosses the state line to arizona is a ranze ranee of altitude from less than feet to more than this splendid variety slopes from the la alone which are in in the north end of the county but it if is amplified by the slopes from the blue and elk which are centrally located from the timbered tors tops of these mountains to tile the colorado river on the west and the san juan riler on the south there is an unusual variety of climate from which to make choice for a place to 0 live and from the black mountain soil among the big pines to the red soil among tile the cedars and pinions and then on to the sandy soil along the rivers there is as much variety of soil as of climate and in in all its wide range of territory for san juan county is as big as the state of new jer jersey s ey there is endless opportunity to make reservoirs develop springs take out ditches from early spring streams and make homes and farms where no one has jived in modern times san juan is considered a dry region but after riding its for many years and taking account of the lorents of water which rush to waste from its canyons and gulches every year we are persuaded that the wise creator has provided adequate means for the profitable use of this land it if men will open their eyes ekes to tile the possibilities Ili ties and conserve the water available and the two rivers offer limitless water later and abundance of opportunity alon along their bottoms and in the n mouths 0 of their canyons to mal make ce i 3 fruitful little gardens gara ens and farms san juan is the most extensive of all the coun counties of utah exceeding any other by more than two thousand square miles and its resources have not yet been touched it has been proved that its soil zone is 9 rich as a dry farm region yet it is but a corner comer of the red soil area which lias has been beyond the red soil area are opportunities tuni tun itic ties of soil climate timber building material a and nd endless invitation to the fullness of progressive homemakers home horne makers the county is about miles long ion and almost as wide more narrow on one end than the other and containing from to square miles we have seen countries which are considered better and other coun tries thies which are very much worse but from long and close association with w ith san juan we have come to believe and to know that it has a great destiny ahead it is yet to take an important part as a country of homes home and a source of many things which contribute to the comfort of roan man laid among the variety of plant and animal life common to this region and among the possibilities of other species which may be successfully introduced trod from the outside this Is an attractive place from which to ur ar something very |
