| Show ARE WE DRIFTING INTO WAR I 1 that is a question one hundred and twenty millions of american people would like to have answered in order to end a rap rapidly icily growing suspense it seems but a short time since we emerged from the last war the most appalling in the history of the world q today we are facing thee possibility even probability I 1 of being drawn into another one as a result of the per distant and defiant attitude of the japanese who have invaded china i none can question the fact that war has been raging in in I 1 manchuria and shanghai regardless of all of the protests of the le league ague of nations and the government of the united states nor can call the fact be questioned that japan is clearly I 1 the aggressor with not a semblance of excuse for her action japan is smooth and plausible in her explanations but explanations do not seem to silence the guns that roar and spread death and destruction at every shot if the japanese continue their advance pd advance vAnce president hoover and the congress congre ss are faced wi wil t X a choice between two evils abandoning our traditional protection to american citizens and our vast commercial interests in hi china or entering the war and throwing the invaders out the first is unthinkable while the latter would not be an easy job would entail endless misery and death for the brave men of our armed forces it is possible that joint diplomatic action by the united unite d states england france and italy may halt the japanese and avert further warfare but should they fail in their peaceful efforts the imminence of another world war stares us in the face with all of its horrors and misery congress is sitting tight with every nerve taut watching the trend of event the american people are doing the same there is little talking but much thinking it is a habit we have just before the breaking of a storm let us hope that the clouds will soon blow over with the sun of peace shining again but in the meantime it would be the part of wisdom to gather up tip our powder and keep it dry |
