| Show ALFALFA WEEVIL LIFE HISTORY I 1 by W W OWENS A C ext ser editors note this Is the first of a series of seven articles prepared I 1 by mr fr owens for or this paper on oil weevil Cont control fol the gheen worm with a black head velch eats cats alfalfa leatta la Is one stage ot of the alafita alfafa weevil eeva anich every farmer knows the entire entile life of th the individual weevil usually covers twelve months and it la only in the J worm or larval stage for one month but it Is at this time it does damage it Is necessary to know where iho the weevil Is 18 and what it does docs the other eleven months ot of its life in order to tind find the weakest spot at which to strike to destroy it the worm boim lives but one month during the spring season varying with altitude from may alay ahr through ough june some earlier some later but the average worm Is consi considered dired here at tle the end of a month it has grown from it a tiny worm one twentieth c of f an inch long to its mature size three eighths of an inch long it drops down to the ground curls up and spins around itself a white netlike web called a cocoon the cocoon Is often attached to a curled up alfalfa leaf which may rea readily tilly be found by hunting in the sl abble the weevil stays in the cocoon stage for about two weeks during which time it gradually canges from a 4 worm into a dark daik brown beetle three sixteenths of in li ani ii long lone I 1 lails his beetle crawls around and is also able to fly it can be found by seal chin in the stubble or t f abundant by looking on the bottom of the havi bayink eck just after a load of the second arop has been taken oft off the adult never eats enough I 1 alfalfa t odo noticeable damage I 1 it t lives over until the next year spending the winter close to the ground under trash and in crevices in april it lays laya eggs in the stems of the growing alf alfalfa alft about eight eggs are d le polte in each hole and one weevil n eggs these yellow bollow eggs may be found by splitting open an alfalfa astern stem which has been punctured the i eggs hatch batch out into small worms in about two weeks and the newborn new born weevil starts on its year of life this Is no 1 yo no 2 the neet artl cle control an individual next week |
