Show California Cities Show Planning Rules of 1573 SACRAMENTO, CALIF. Several California cities even today bear the stamp of city planning regulations laid down by the king of Spain in a royal edict of 1573, the state planning plan-ning board revealed. The ancient decree set forth standard regulations to be followed in establishing towns in the New world. Business was ordered to front on a central plaza, streets were oriented with relation to prevailing winds and objectionable features such as slaughter houses were restricted re-stricted to a single isolated district Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, San Jose and Sonoma are among those communities com-munities showing the influence of the early Spanish layout |
