Show DAWSOfi SCORES ATTEMPT TO HIKE WAGES WASHINGTON, D. C. - The American taxpayer cannot afford to pay senators, congressmen and federal district court justices any more than they are now being paid, Rep. William A. Dawson (R., Utah) testified before a special commis sion on judiciary and congressional salaries. The Utah representative appeared personally before the commission which opened hearings on congressional congres-sional salaries in the U. S. capitol this week. "When I campaigned for office, I told the taxpayers the business in' which they held stock the federal government was in a sad way,'"- Congressman Dawson said. "Despite heavy assessments in the form of taxes, it was going deeper into the red every year." "The best information I have is that despite our efforts the federal government will continue to operate oper-ate at a deficit next year. When a government or a business is operating oper-ating at a loss, it is no time to raise the salaries of its officers," he testified. The congressman told the commission com-mission members there was little measurable relationship between pay levels and the qualifications of public officials, assuming that the pay is adequate to permit a comfortable standard of living .
