Show PIONEER SOUS to notion DR.J.A.WIDTSOE Dr. John A. Widtsoe of the Council of the Twelve of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints will be honored at the luncheon meeting of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, Wednesday, August Au-gust 27 at the Hotel Utah, it was announced by SUP president Nicholas Nich-olas G. Morgan. It is at this meeting that a bust of Dr. Widtsoe will be unveiled. un-veiled. The piece of sculpturing was created by Dr. Avard Fair-hanks, Fair-hanks, who has been commissioned to do busts of a number of men who have contributed greatly to-western to-western history. The completed pieces will all be placed in the UP Museum Hall of Fame. Dr. Widtsoe emigrated from Norway with his mother, and later graduated from both Brigham Young University and Harvard. After teaching chemistry at the Utah State Agricultural college, he went to Germany where he graduated from Goettingen university univer-sity with an A. M. PhD degree. Having taught at all three Utah colleges, Dr. Widtsoe served as president of both U of U and USAC. He directed much experimental experi-mental work in agriculture, conducted con-ducted the first farming institute in Utah, and was president of the Internation Farming Congress in Canada. The noted educator authored the 'Principles of Irrigation Prac. tices, Concordance of the Doctrine and Covenants" and many other books, both ecclesiastical and secural. Widtsoe was made an apostle in the LDS church in 1922 and five years later, assigned to lead the British Mission as president. He also organized Delta Phi, the returned re-turned missionary fraternity at the U of U. |
