Show " REP. DAWSON DOTOR'S DRAFT Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson said that because of more efficient use of medical personnel in the service, the "Doctor's Draft" law can be modified. The new law which will be up for action in Congress this week would exempt from service doctors and dentists who have already served more than 17 I months in World War II. The old I law required 21 months for ex-l ex-l emption. COAL FIRES A minor hill, which I voted for in Congress this week, may prove of value to Utah's miners. The bill sets up a research project in the Department of Interior In-terior to investigate the cause and control of underground fires in coal formations. TOUGH ON TRUSTS - Another bill I approved this week was to increase penalties for violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act from 35,000 to ,$50,000. Under the present law, a $5,000 maximum penalty was not high enough to act as a deterrant to any corporation who willfully violated the law. MORE APPROPRIATIONS The House passed and sent to the Senate Sen-ate the appropriations for 1954 for the Departments of State. Justice and Commerce. As with all other departments, these three also were trimmed far under the amount requested re-quested by the old administration STILL A BILLION - Although the budgets of the three departments depart-ments were cut $326,347,803 under what was requested, the overall appropriation totaled $1,143,146,712 Even this amount will not permit any new airport construction with federal funds this year, although there are funds in the bill to complete com-plete projects already under way such as at Salt Lake Municipal airport. SPEAKING OF $ - A budget statistician furnished an interesting illustration of what $1 billion would buy. It would pay for a 100-foot highway from Logan to Provo plus $1,000 lots and $10,000 homes every 100 feet along both sides of the road plus $10,000 in cash to each of the families who lived in the houses. 1 |
