Show PALMER TALKS EDUCATION FREEDOM HERE Speaking at the Daughters of the American Revolution spring conference at Hotel Newhouse Saturday Sat-urday morning, Dr. J. Richard Palmer, president of Westminster college, talked on "Responsibilities of Freedom." "Liberty is not the right to do as one pleases, but is the responsibility respon-sibility to' choose what is right," Dr. Palmer said. He further pointed out the potential po-tential dangers of our national freedom free-dom in stateism inroads . . . the growing tendency on part of the government to subsidize higher education. The United States government gov-ernment pays about half the cost of higher education in the country, through research grants, etc. He pointed out that the danger lies in the fact that once the money is put in an institution, then comes control. "In order to keep academic freedom, free-dom, we must keep our educational institutions free from control that we shall always be free to teach and preach," Dr. Palmer continued. About 50 attended the conference and arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Arthur G. Bloom and Mrs. H. P. Parmlee. |
