Show - o C. of C. Gives Year's Activity Review I), JAMES CANNON REVIEWS SUGAR HOUSE ACCOMPLISHMENTS Next Monday brings to a close a most successful year for Sugar House. As has been the case for 18 years, the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce played the leading role in both the commercial and civic development of Sugar House. Representing more than 220 members, mem-bers, the chamber did much in its program to improve and enhance the community. Accomplishments of the chamber for 1956 are best described in reviewing re-viewing accomplishments of its committees. Since two of these standing committees Finance and Membership - are "internal" they will not be listed below. However, How-ever, much of the success of the overall program depends on the work of these two committees, plus the work of the chamber staff. The Public Affairs committee with its subdivisions of Community Services, Operation Home Improvement, Improve-ment, Traffic and Roads, Beautifi-cation Beautifi-cation and Parks, Plans and Zoning Zon-ing took the lead in all activities relating to these subdivisions. In addition to the unnoticed but important im-portant meetings with city, county and state officials in behalf of this program, the Public Affairs committee com-mittee accomplished such specific projects as: community cleanup, hanging flower baskets, operation home improvement program through junior high schools, street improvement, traffic controls. Under the heading of the Business Busi-ness Development committee which includes: Tourist, Education, Now Buoinocs, Service Club Cooperation, Coop-eration, Better Business several worthwhile accomplishments should be noted. Sugar House had for the first time its own license plate issuing center in January and February. This activity was arranged for by the Business Development committee, r which also did the same for the Antique Show held in Sugar House in April. The committee also took the chamber film, "It's Everybody's Business" to several local schools; it conducted a tourist education school in May; it laid plans tor a better business program for Sugar House. In addition to planning the monthly meetings, the Program committee sponsored the July Old Timers day, the November Manufacturers Manu-facturers luncheon, and the annual December Christmas Party. The Retail Trades Committee-conducted Committee-conducted three successful annual promotion events: Dollar Days, and Turkey Days. In addition, the committee took the lead in the Christmas decorating, which featured fea-tured large, colorful candy canes on utility poles; the annual "Miss Sugar House" contest; and a mid week promotion during late summer sum-mer months called "Shopportunity Day." Parking Committee noted as the year drew to a close that a large portion of the old Sugar House Park was at last graded, leveled and cleared for employee parking, and the "E-E" (employer-employee) program had been formulated, formu-lated, approved, and was ready to be implemented for '57. A successful "get out the vote" project was carried on by the Legislative Leg-islative Affairs committee m the fall In addition, many legislative studies were carried on in relation to city, state and national matters. In a general way, the chamber year was highlighted by attractive iloats in .the big Days of 47 parade; Centennial Plates on display dis-play in Sugar House businesses; a campaign to feature the magic name of Sugar House; a campaign to display the national flag on all holidays. |
