Watkins' announcement indicated in-dicated that he will run for reelection re-election on his record as a middle-of-the-road Republican who can be classified neither with the liberal nor conservative extremes of the party. In a review of his voting record he summarized his position on major legislative issues as follows: fol-lows: Foreign policy: Generally supports sup-ports the policy which has been followed. Voted for Greek-Turkish loan, Marshall Plan and Mutual Security Program, but opposed the Italian peace treaty, which later was changed to conform to one of his objections. Approved North Atlantic Pact in principle. Urged reversal of policy in China and preservation of independence of Korea in 1947. Supported Japanese peace treaty after getting reservation reserva-tion disavowing the Yalta agreement agree-ment so far as it affected the Pacific. Agriculture: Opposes Brannan plan and supports program adopt, ted by 80th Congress. Labor: Supports Taft-Hartley Act but favors amendments. Education: Supported and aided in passage of legislation to provide pro-vide $300 million federal aid annually an-nually to the states. |
