Show GROUND THE CORNER IN SUGAR HOUSE By D. JAMES CANNOX WE HEARD a nice compli.-mcnt compli.-mcnt for Ray Free this week from Lcs Hewlett, Jr., which we think typifies the spirit of Sugar House. It seems that Les' plant on State Street was hit on a Sunday morning by the flood caused by the recent rains. Ray responded to the call and brought dry ice in his own car' to the Hewlett plant, and stayed on until things were running right again. Les told us about-the about-the incident and praised Ray to the skies. AS USUAL, we see that Sugar House folks are still playing a prominent role in the Sons of Utah Pioneers. Three of the five vice-presidents elected at the recent re-cent national encampment i n Cedar City are southeasterners. The honored threesome are Richard Rich-ard K. Lambert, Nicholas G. Morgan, Sr., and Horace A. Sor- ensen. Outgoing president is Fred E. Curtis, also a prominent southeasterner. i HERE'S A LITTLE advice for Gov. Lee and the Board of Corrections in regard to continued contin-ued trouble at the Utah State Prison. It seems to many of us that the state has had nothing but trouble with the prison since the release of Warden John E. Harris some time after Lee took office. Perhaps the powers-that-be should forget politics and reinstate re-instate Harris in the job which he handled so efficiently and well. After Harris' release, the Board named Mason Hill, then Severson, then Callicott, then an appointment of Acting Warden Haslam. Harris had been apr pointed by Gov. Blood, and had an unblemished record during his more than 10 years in the job. Are the state officials big enough to see their mistakes and bring back the best man for the job? THINGS ARE BUZZING behind be-hind the buildings on the northwest north-west corner of 21st South and 11th East. Brand new black top has been put down back of Firstl Security Bank for off-street off-street parking; a new approach to the lot is being finished just east of the Fireside Shop on 11th East; Southeast Shoe, Jar-nel's Jar-nel's and Shop Scotch are putting put-ting on additions to the rear of their stores. Just another proof that the community's progressing. progress-ing. WE'RE HAPPY to see the appointment ap-pointment of Vern Mackay and Wilford Kimball as manager and assistant manager of the new Walker Bank in Sugar House. Both of them are southeasterners and fine men. |
