Show A METHOD OF RECLAIMING SOLDER A depot activity, revolutionary in its import, which is receiving rhuch acclaim is the development of the solder recovery program at Tooele Ordnance Depot. It has been known for a long j time that a considerable amount of solder was contained in the terneplate liner of ammunition boxes but a method of recovering recover-ing economically could not be found. It remained for Brass Re-clamation Re-clamation Section under the direction dir-ection of Captain C. W. Main and with the assistance of Mr. Ed Myers, Field Service Maintenance welding foreman, to develop a recovering this critical alloy that solder has become virtually the solder has become virtually unobtainable without the highest ' priority and because the su'osti-1 su'osti-1 tute currently in use by people who must have solder of " some kind has caused so much difficulty, difficul-ty, the success of this project as sumes tremendous significance. By a trial and error method, the process has been developed, obstacles have been overcome, equipment has been built and recovered re-covered solder is now netting the government a nice profit. Bars are moulded to about one and one one half pound per bar. They have been assayed with the result that it has been determined that they meet all requirements 50-50 grade A solder. An interesting sidelight on the procedure was the building of the furnace required for the work. The furnace was constructed from a furnace drum, which had beer, junked and was found in the , Salvage yard. and from a few spare parts from the popping plant furnaces. In spite of its ' conglomerate background there is j nothing of the Rube Goldberg j about the completed equipment. Tooele Ordanance Depot has ' forged ahead again to provide a critical material from what was I once scrap. |
