' ' K h nrr i V- -V.. -.-1 : f t ."C I -Utah publishers, meeting at the 45th annual convention of the Utah State Press association, Saturday Sat-urday and Sunday, returned to their homes feeeling that this year's meeting was one of (the most successful in history. Leaving Salt Lake City Saturday Sat-urday morning, newsmen were guests during the forepart of day and for luncheon at Kearns, the army forces basic training center near this city. As the guest of Colonel Converse R. Lewis, the publishers were given giv-en first-hand demonstrations' on just how the army of the United States is trained. A soldiers' mess was served those attending, and a program of outstanding talent was presented. William C. Winder Jr. of Salt Lake City and Captian A. E. Gilbert, public relations of ficer at Fort Douglas, were speakers on the program. Returning to Salt Lake City, association members wer welcomed welcom-ed by Fred Tedesco, Salt .Lake City commisioner. Harrison Con-over, Con-over, publisher of the Springville Herald, was named president of the organization, s ucceedir.g Frank S. Beckwith, publisher of the Millard County Chronicle att Delta. Roy A. Schonian, publisher of the Uintah Basin Record at Duchesne, was named vice-president and Albert W. Epperson, editor of the Kaysville Reflex, was reelected secretary-treasurer. Directors named were: Cantril Nielsen, pumisher of the South cache Courier at Hyrum; George L. Crowther, publisher of the Salt Lake Times; Clifton N. Memmott, publisher of the Helper Journal; A. B. "Gibson, publisher of the Pieasant Grove Review, and M. C. Fullenbach, publisher of the Richfield Reaper. Mr. Beckwith is also a member of the executive committee. A banquet Saturday evening, was given by John E. Jones, manager of the Western Newspaper News-paper Union. With Frank B. Edgar Ed-gar as master' of ceremonies, guests and new officers were introduced in-troduced Private Fielding K. Smith, U.S.A. Fort Douglas, w.s 1 was guest speaker. Sunday mornig's session was devoted to business, with H. F. Kretehman, editor of the Salt Lake Telegram; Ottis Peterson, state director of the Office of War Information, and Sergeant H. Wintersteen. of the U. S. Marines Ma-rines as speakers. Gus Bachman, secretary of the of the Salt Laks Chamber of Commerce welcomed the publishers. |
