Show Marines and Navy Men Awarded Silver Crosses Corporal Donald E. Wittke, son of Mrs. Florence Wittke, 23 North First West, Salt Lake City, has been awarded the Silver Cross. The Fouth Marines, together with Naval medical Personnel attached at-tached to that famous Leatherneck Leather-neck regiment, have been showered show-ered with decorations and commendations com-mendations for heroism in the battle of the Philippines, according accord-ing to information received from bomb blasted Corringdor before that stronghold fell. Twenty-one officers and 155 enlisted men of the Fourth Regiment, Reg-iment, U. S. Marine Corps, have been so honored. All of the medals med-als were Army decorations. No information is available as to the meritorious actions for which the awards were made. The Distinguished Service Cross was amarded posthumously to Private First Class Robert J. Brown, TJSMC, of Havana 111. Three enlisted men each received two decorations and a letter of commendation, while 14 enlisted men and four officers received two awards. Those thrice honored were Ralph S. Ney, Pharmacist's Mate Second-Class, U. S. Navy, of Minneapolis, Min-neapolis, Minn., and Corporal William N. McCormack. USMC, of Houston, Texas, each of whom received the Silver Star, with Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a second Silver Star, and a letter of commendation; com-mendation; and Field Cook John F. Ray. USMC, of Seattle, Washington, Wash-ington, who was awarded a Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and a letter of commendation. The Fourth Marines, commanded command-ed by Colonel Samuel L. Howard of Washington. D. C, were transferred trans-ferred from Shanghai just before the war broke out between the United States and Japan, and, together with Navy blujackets, they fought at Cavite Navy Yard at Olongapo, at Mariveles and at various places on Bataari Peninsula. Wainwright during the closing phases of the battled of Bataan. |
