Show . i Utah Contains Chief Uranium Deposits in U.S. The tremendous destructive-ness destructive-ness of the atomic bomb originates origi-nates in uranium, and oddly enough the chief uranium deposits de-posits of the United States are found in southeastern Utah and western Colorado. Uranium is extracted from a yellow ore called call-ed "Carnotite" and the known deposits in Utah are in the Colorado Col-orado River basin in Grand, Wayne, Garfield and San Juan Counties. A number of Carnotite deposits de-posits in Utah were mined during dur-ing the war which at that time was a top war secret. Now after aft-er two years of peace, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission says it will resume the purchase of uranium-rich Carnotite ores. In addition they say they have purchased the Carnotite ore processing plant built during the war at Monticello and actual processing of uranium concentrates concen-trates will be started in 1949. Ores will be purchased at the Monticello plant this summer, and the high price of Carnotite should make it worth while for interested Utahns to take up the prospecting for uranium. Easy to Find Finding the yellow, uranium-bearing uranium-bearing Carnotite is no problem for the experienced prospector, as it is easily identified and is usually found on the surface or a few feet under the ground. Oddly enough, the richest Carnotite Car-notite ore finds are usually associated as-sociated with fossilized trees and dinosaur bones, the location of which often proves an important import-ant lead to uncovering valuable deposits. Experienced uranium prospectors pros-pectors no doubt have already started combing the isolated sections sec-tions of southeastern Utah anxiously an-xiously looking for the ores from which more atomic bombs will be created. |
