Show Good Example: That special bank which Ellen Ballon has in her New York studio is just beginning to fill again. Miss Ballon keeps the bank solely for the purpose of saving sav-ing dimes for the March of Dimes. Each year, when the campaign to aid infantile paralysis victims opens, the Canadian pianist opens her bank and her contribution is ready. "It is an inspiration to save for such a purpose," she said. "Whenever I am tempted to spend a dime instead in-stead of other change, I think of a child with pleading eyes sitting in a wheeled chair and all my dimes go into a separate compartment in my purse to be dropped into that little bank just as soon as I return to my studio." End Piece: Crossing Lexington avenue on 49th street, Igor Gorin, young baritone, narrowly avoided being run over by a truck when his eyes suddenly lighted on the curious electric legend, "She Corner." When he had regained the curb, and his composure, he discovered that some bulbs were missing in the sign, "Shlian- Corner Bat." .. A I Hi By L. L. STEVENSON Expert: Horseshoe pitchers gather gath-er daily in Central park and give demonstrations of their skill in hot contests. The other afternoon a rather small, brown-eyed, attractive girl appeared and asked permission to take part in the game. After a lot of chuckling, she was allowed to take a place. In no time at all, the winsome miss proved to her competitors com-petitors that she knew all about ringers, ring-ers, leaners and various other points of the game. In fact, she emerged victor. Then it was learned that she's 20-year-old Dixie Roberts of Kent Cliffs, N. Y. Her father is horseshoe pitching champion up there and he taught her. He also taught her to shoot pool. Miss Roberts, Rob-erts, who is currently winning applause ap-plause with her super tap dancing at the swank Copacabana, is a vegetarian, vegetari-an, her diet consisting mostly of green salads and vegetable juices. Fuel: During the recent cold spell. New Yorkers with fireplaces put them to good use and were rather inclined to look down on friends who were entirely dependent on radiators. radia-tors. Fireplaces are in great demand de-mand in New York but New Yorkers have little if any storage space for fireplace wood, so wood is bought by the stick. Department stores also have been advertising sorne kind of artificial logs that burn for an hour or more and leave little ash, and few ashes are something to be desired de-sired because ashes are not easy to dispose of. Demand for wood is so constant that one firm up in Harlem has been selling it for the last 75 yeans. The present price is $1.50 for a bag of hardwood, the customer to come and get it and take it home. ' i Relief: The head of a concern that traces persons who skip out and leave installments unpaid and which also does a general investigating business, told of a client who had made a cross country trip to marry a man whom she had known so shortly that she wanted his record gone into thoroughly. Two days later, lat-er, a report was made to her that painted the man in anything but a favorable light. Among other things, he had impersonated an army officer, of-ficer, assumed a professional title 1 and had concealed a former marriage. mar-riage. In addition, he had omitted mention of a prison term he had served. At the conclusion, the redheaded red-headed widow smiled sweetly and said, "Oh, is that all? I was afraid he might have been involved in something really bad." And then she went ahead and married him. Decision: Reports one of our Hollywood Hol-lywood sentinels: Four fans showed up at Danny Kaye's home to ask his permission to picket two of the small Los Angeles theaters that were featuring shorts made eight or nine years ago and which in no way show Kaye's talents. Danny said "no" and explained that the time always comes in a performer's early career when he either must make shorts to pay the rent and grocery gro-cery bills in order that he may go onward or upward or he gets along without the shorts and the groceries. "You take your choice and you're stuck with it," continued Danny. "It happened to Joe Penner; it happened hap-pened to Edgar Bergen. It happened 1 to many others. Now it's happened to me and I'd rather take my medicine medi-cine than have you youngsters take .a chance on getting into trouble." |
