Show EDITORIAL Utahns Don't Want Prison Site Sold AT ITS recent encampment at Brighton the Sons of Utah Pioneers organization unanimously passed a resolution in favor of the development of the Utah Pioneer State Park to be built at the prison site. S. U. P. members from all parts of the state expressed their approval of the plan. Several veterans' organizations, plus the Utah Associated Garden Clubs, Salt Lake Theatre, Inc, and sportsmen's groups are also wholeheartedly in favor of- the state park. These backers do not include, of course, thousands of independent citizens who have caught the vision of what the state park can do for all of Utah in the way of tourist trade and cultural advancement. The one thing these groups are not in favor of is the proposal pro-posal that part of the site be sold to the Salt Lake City school board for a high school location. As lone prominent Utah artist put it: "There would be no Central Park in New York if its backers hadn't refused to sell one inch of it." The artist pointed out that if we start letting chunks of the prison site go, we will end up with nothing suitable for a state park. All Isoutheastemers want to have a new high school. Its , location, however, should be decided upon in relation to future fu-ture needs. Several city planners have pointed out that since the population trend is definitely east and south, that no location lo-cation on or near the prison site would be satisfactory. For the good of the southeast it is to be hoped that the Salt Lake City school board will not delay lany longer its choosing of a high school site someplace east or south of the prison site. There are still many open pieces of ground large enough for the purpose. If the school board waits until the 1951 legislature to request part of the prison property, it may be too late to get a suitable site for the proposed high school. If the coming legislature is anything like the 1947 1 and 1949 groups, the board's request for prison land will be rejected re-jected also. It is the school board's responsibility to select another site now. |
