Show NOTES FROM U Of U Graduation exercises for approximately ap-proximately 50 engineers of the University of Utah School of Mines Min-es and Engineering was held April Ap-ril 25, a full six weeks before the class was slated to complete its school work, according to A Le-Roy Le-Roy Taylor, dean of the school. The engineering course was accelerated to provide the army and war industries with compen-tly compen-tly trained technicians, and was effected by a plan of classes which included longer hours per day, six-school weeks, and no holidays, hol-idays, Dean Taylor said. Approximately 20 other members mem-bers of the graduating class have already been drafted in to the army or defense work, he added. The school of Mines and Engineering En-gineering has a total enrollment of 570, and is the only four year , school in the University. In addition, ad-dition, it trained 475 men for defense industries in 1941, and 950 during the first three months of 1942. Beginning with a- single class in mechanical drawing in 1869,. the school has grown to its present pres-ent dimensions by rapid advances. A course in surveying was added to the University curriculum in 1870, and by 1893 a full four year course in mining engineering had been set up. In 1895 a "Mining School" was established, which granted certificates in mining to graduates. At this time the entire en-tire faculty of the new school consisted of three members. Courses in electrical engineering engineer-ing were introduced in 1897, and in 1901 a formal School of Mines was established by an act of the State Legislature. In 1936, the five departments of mining, metallurgical, electrical, electri-cal, mechanical and civil engineering engin-eering were nationally accredited, and the school took its place among the foremost engineering schools in the west. Enrollment that year totaled 479. 'The fact that all graduates for a number of years have been placed within two months of graduation gra-duation in indicative of the reputation re-putation of the school," Dean Taylor said. At present there are 22 facul-many facul-many graduate assistants. Seven ty members In the school, and separate fields are offered for tspeclalizatioit includtog mining, i metallurgy, electrical, mechanical, civil, geological and chemical engineering. en-gineering. In each denartment. anv one of several major subjects mav be selected, the school dean added. For instance, in mechanical en-eering en-eering the student is offered a choice of studying areoneutice. heat rower, or deien, pnd in electrical el-ectrical engineering he may choose between power and communication. com-munication. Dean Taylor emphasized the importance of well-trained engineer engin-eer in war. "Manv engineering: students, only half -trained, have been drafted draf-ted for artillery service, however he added. "They are valuable because be-cause of special training in mathematics." |
