Show SITE SUGGESTED FOR NEW FIRE STATION IN S. E. Tentative Site Would Use City Owned Property-Location Property-Location to Serve New Home District; Structure to Cost $20,000 Proposed By Mayor n Rapid action in selecting a tentative site for the new fire station for the Southeast section of Salt Lake City, Mayor Ab Jenkins and Fire Chief LaVere M. Hanson prepared to recommend recom-mend to the city that the property prop-erty owned by the city immediately immedi-ately north of Seventeenth South street and between Twenty-third East and the Foothill Drive be used for this purpose. This location would serve the district immediately east of Sugar Su-gar House where so many homes have been constructed during the past two years. It would serve the Highland Park district as well and would greatly aid in protecting the Sugar House district. dis-trict. Although none of the civic, clubs of Sugar House are prepared pre-pared to make any statements as yet on the suggested site, it is believed that the location is suitable to serve the greatest number of people. The site was considered because of a survey made by the insurance underwriters. under-writers. Cost of the suggested structure would be $20,000 and its design would be in keeping with homes in the vicinity. Facts about the necessity of a fire station in the Southeast pai t of the city were brought out by 'committees from the Sugar House. Chamber of Commerce when it was found that eighty per cent of the new homes constructed in 1939 and 1940 were built east of Ninth East street and South of Ninth South street. There was only one fire station in this particular parti-cular section and fire protection was effected from two other stations sta-tions outside this region. - The Highland Park Improvement League Lea-gue joined with Sugar House civic clubs and suceeded in having hav-ing the amount for the new building put in the next year's budget of Salt Lake City. However, How-ever, the commission agreed to start on the building in the summer sum-mer of 1941. |
