Show Taps "Taps" was originally a signal for retiring in military camps and was played on the drums. Later it was sounded on the bugle, the commonest common-est tune, "The Last Post," being introduced in-troduced into this country by the British army during the Revolution. The melody of the present "Taps" was composed by Daniel Butter-worth, Butter-worth, a brigadier-general in the Union army. It was first sounded on the bugle by Oliver W. Norton, brigade brig-ade bugler, at Harrison' Landing, Va., in July, 1862. |
