Show PAGE TWO , SUGAR HOUSE, UTAH THURSDAY MARCH 24, 1960 INDEPENDENT When two sincere, honest, dedicated but controversial men like Mayor J. Bracken Lee and W. .Qeon Skousen meet head on aaaixiss s 8 The differences that exist between these two men are personal beliefs and they both have equal rights to these beliefs. These dif-ferences apparently made it impossible for the two men to work together. Mayor Lee and the commission had the legal right to dismiss Mr. Skousen as the head of the department. Whether Mayor Lee was correct or not in his action will only be determined bytime and by time alone. This public berating of personalities and clamor of name calling will avail nothing. Salt Lake City's future does not depend on the existence of one man and we will survive as a populace. We are in for a different type and style of administration than we have recently experienced and this was a known fact when J. Bracken was elected mayor. Anyone that expected conditions could remain the same was not aware of reality. Personalities involving others besides the two "combatants" should not be brought into the controversy and it is completely unfair to people who have merely expressed their own. opinions. The South East Independent openly backed Mayor Lee during his campaign and will have to continue backing his actions until time proves him wrong. Already this" paper disagrees in principle with one or two of his beliefs, but an attempt will be made at a later date to present these differences in a logical manner. Mayor Lee no doubt has the best interests of the entire public as his driving force. He is sometimes alarming as to his methods of accomplishment but mis trait is common to all men of action that believe wholeheartedly in their goals in life. . The reservoir mixing tank, as well as the various valves and controls, seen on the right rear of the truck (fore-groun- d) were all developed and built by the fire department mechanics. FIRE DEPARTMENT FACTS , Any yearly report by a department of the City must carry a lot of dull statistics but there are also some facts revealed in the 1959 Fire De-partment report that are not usually publicized but are amazing when read. During 1959 the Salt Lake City Fire Depart-ment: Answered 113 airplane standby alarms. Answered 554 precautionary runs. These are calls where a fire is only suspected, due to smoke odors, etc. Responded to 2,460 alarms, with 5420 total apparatus responses. Raised7,907 feet of ladder. Strung out and therefore had to pick up 469,800 , feet of hose. Used approximately 1,920,956 gallons of water. Made a total of 17,020 inspections, business homes, etc. in the interest of fire prevention. Gave 105 lectures and demonstrations to 4,423 persons. Had 6,418 persons make visits to the fire TV And stations. Delinquency Merle Riche A great supplementary system of education is coming into every American home. It is not to the quick getaway in robbery, how to jimmy a door or window, how to use a master key, how to maim or kill motorcycle policemen, how to pick pockets, the use of gloves in burglary, how to force the door of an automobile with a piece of pipe, and so on. The dire consequences of allowing indiscriminate showing of socially . undesirable motion pictures to children is now upon us. Inasmuch as there is no effective way to police the situation it devolves upon parents to exercise their responsibility over their children. good. I refer to the motion picture diet mat is fed to people via TV. It must be understood that a child of nine will get sixty per cent of what an adult does from a motion picture Careful testing proved that after six weeks second and third-gra- de children still remembered 90 per cent of what they had seen in pictures. High-scho- ol' children and adolescents still remembered 88 per cent. ; The important thing is, then, what they are allowed to see. In a survey of 1500 motion pictures covering three, years, 500 pictures a year, it was found that 75 per cent of the pictures were preoccupied with love, sex, and crime. In another survey of115 pictures just as they came off the screen with' no attempt to pick certain ones 406 crimes were committed, 43 more attempted which made a total of 449 crimes in 115 pictures. Think of it! Fifty four murders, 71 homicides, 59 cases of assault and battery. 36 hold-up- s. 21 kid-napin- gs, and numerous other crimes all in 115 pictures. Now, when a child is known through tests to absorb 30 per cent of what he reads and 70 of what he sees the importance of seeing becomes a major area for control. Court Investigators found no less than thirty-on- e different techniques of crime learned by young lads from the movies and subsequently practiced in their criminal activities. For example: how to cut burglar alarm wires in advance during the day, how to break windows noiselessly for forcing way into store or house to be burglarized, how to act and what to do in robbery with a gun. Sf Arthur Richardson Home is the place where we are loved the most and act the worst. This is not only true of the young folks but the adults get in on the game, too. It should be understood that we cannot misbehave towards one another and expect to have togetherness. This applies to a husband and wife team as well as to any other. Some time ago Professor San-fo- rd M. Bingham prepared these ten commandments for Husbands. . Remember that thy wife is thy partner and not thy property. 2. Do not expect thy wife to be thy wife and wage earner too. 3. Think not that thy business is none of thy wife's business. 4. Thou shalt hold thy wife's love by the same means that you won it. 5. Thou shalt make the building of thy home thy first business. 6. Thou shalt cooperate with thy wife in establishing family discipline. 7. Thou shalt enter into thy house with cheerfulness. 8. Thou shalt not let anyone criticise thy wife to thy wife and get away with it, neither thy father nor thy mother nor thy brethren nor thy sisters nor any that are thy kin, 9. Thou shalt not take thy wife for granted. 10. Remember thy home and keep it holy. Those are pretty good rules for happiness 'for a husband. Next week Til give you what the learned professor calls his ten com-mandments for wives. $::::&K::fti ' PIEJ! -- ' Someone away AT SCHOOL?
