On Monday. January 4th, at 7:00 p.m. at the New Union Building on the University Campus a unique event in Salt Lake City's history took place. An Inaugural Banquet and Ball was held for the nev Mayor, J. Bracken Lee. Due to a ruling by the Building Committee for the University, there was no dancing. In attendance were some 1100 people, Salt Lake citizens and well-wishers well-wishers from over the state'and out of state. The Mayor and Mrs. Lee led a group of honored guests to the two tiers of elevated tables amid applause and a standing ovation. Commissioners Com-missioners Piercey, Romney, Geurts, Christensen, Larsen, and Gun-derson Gun-derson were in the group. Former members of the staff of the Independent Emerson S. Smith and Afton Seegmiller were a part of the retinue. Colors were posted by the American Legion and an invocation given by Lamont Gundersen. King Clausen was the M.C. for the gala affair, introducing the notables and their wives at the head tables. At 8:00 p.m. Major Lee, after an introduction by Jennings Phillips, spoke to the assembly and over the radio. "Brack's" speech was forthright in every respect, delivered with evident sincerity. Reference was made to the "liabilities rather than assets" which he has inherited from the preceding city government; to the public safety department which he will head, though not from choice- he intends to be active in every facet of city affairs; and to the fact that a new City Hall would be beautiful, but the only way, outside of magic, to finance it, is "from you". "Even a ten-year-old can spend all the money you give him, it takes intelligence to spend wisely." Mr. Lee mentioned the political philosophy of "smiling while you skin the people" in referring to the popularity of the commissioner with the city employees even as they decried the state of the city building for which he was responsible. That the income tax is as old as man is no reason it is a good. Mr. Lee intends to maintain his position that it is unconstitutional, that it is an evil that cannot be reduced but must be eliminated. Addiction can only be cured by abstinence and the income tax is likened to such an ,addietion. Mayor Lee promised ,to.do what is best for all the citizens, . - ; not just for a few, emphasizing that the city government is the closest to the people of any form of government, but that his aims cannot be accomplished by "tomorrow morning". The evening was officially closed with a prayer by Father Steven Katsaras but the crowd thronged to the speaker's table to greet Mr. Lee and his lovely wife and offer their congratulations on his new office. 1 O .V'"l ; V - . irwi.Mi-imii.ai-i----"'-'""" -' i Commissioner Piercey receives congratulations from crowd at the Banquet. ; ' - 1 " ;-.
