Show Editorial... The legislative mills on both the Federal and State levels are busily engaged in formulating laws and procedures to govern us for a while to come. Just so- that it won't be entirely overlooked we should like to go on record as approving two proposed amendments to the Federal Fed-eral Constitution. One is amendment 23 addressed to the proposition that the "basic and fundamental law of our land might recognize the Master Architect, Arch-itect, Creator, and Builder of the Universe, the Almighty God, who hung out the stars and lit the burning burn-ing taper of the sun and draped the glorious rainbow as a scarf about the shoulders of the storm; and also to the further end that there may be recognized in that same Constitution Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Universal Savior of all mankind." It was thus, in part, that the Honorable Eugene Siler described the reason for his resolution. He went on to quote two famous passages from King James: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord" and "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Many people believe that t the greatest deficiency of our present Constitution lies in its failure to recognize specifically God Almighty Al-mighty and America's definite position as a great Christian nation. na-tion. The proposed amendment in no way infringes upon the church-state church-state separation tradition of our government. The second amendment we believe be-lieve to be good is contained in the resolution sponsored by Senator Bridges of New Hampshire, Senator Sen-ator Byrd of Virginia and Senator Curtis from Nebraska. It proposes that the Executive present a balanced bal-anced budget, with a further requirement re-quirement that Congress could not adjourn or recess for more than three days without the passage of a balanced budget except in time of a declared war or a national emergency. We are all aware that we are $274 billion dollars in debt which is greater indebtedness than all the other governments of the world put together. Payed off at a billion a year would take 274 years with a plus of 8 million a year interest. This nation would have to exist 93 years longer than its total life so far to square to toll. Except for grave national emergencies emer-gencies there is no excuse for an unbalanced budget. We believe the government should look upon a balanced budget as more than a mere matter of bookkeeping figures. fig-ures. We believe the government has a duty to maintain the integrity integ-rity of the dollar. This resolution therefore has great potential good so far as the future welfare of this Nation is concerned. Drop a line to your representatives representa-tives and senators letting them know how you feel about these two very important resolutions leading lead-ing to Constitutional amendments to increase our safety as individual citizens of this great Republic. |
