Show Martha Hyer Gets Dressed Up Martha Hyer, who won her long-term contract with Universal-International Studios because she was one of the most glam orous women studio casting ex-evutives ex-evutives had ever seen, is finally getting a chance to go glamorous on the screen. 'I've been waiting for this one a long, long time," says Martha of her co-starring role with Van Johnson and Piper Laurie in TJ-I's "Kelly and Me," now playing play-ing at the Southeast Theatre. - "Glamour, for me, has been a strange thing," explains the Texas-born blonde beauty. "When I first started in Hollywood, I did 'plain Jane' roles and attracted attract-ed hardly any attention at all. Finally, I did a real glamour role-complete with Edith Head gowns-in 'Sabrina.' That started things rolling, won the U-I con-tract--and that's the last I saw of glamour until now." Martha hastens to add that she was more than happy with her first roles, dramatically speaking. "It was just that in my first film I was hidden under a black wig and a heavy, wide hoopskirt,, in the second I was tailored WAVE uniform, and in the third and fourth I was a staunch heroine of the old Wiest in either crinolise sun dresses or riding breeches. My. feminine morale was at a point less than zero." At long last, however, Martha has won a starring role as a femme fatalea break for audi- Iences as well as herself. In "Kelly and Me" she portrays a top movie star of "the 30's-and has a wardrobe ward-robe to match. "And if you don't think I took advantage of this one," says Martha Mar-tha with a gleam in her eye, "just watch my slink!" |
