' . J Cleopatra Was No Dummy Legend has It that Cleopatra ient slaves to gather early morn-ing dew so that she might wash her face in it. Probably she didn't know that dew is soft water, but she found from experience that it was best for her beauty. Why? Because soft water forms rich, gentle suds that reach down deep into pores and remove every trace of stale make-u-p and dirt. Result . . . clear, smooth, soft skin. Hard water forms a sticky soap scum that coats skin, clogs pores and never really rinses off. Result ... a dingy-lookin- g com-plexion and rough, red hands. Today, women can have water softer than dew at the turn of any home faucet, say the experts at Permutit Water Conditioning Headquarters, Birmingham, N. J. A simple water softener, no larger than a water heater, at-tached to the incoming supply line, instantly removes hardness-causin- g minerals as water flows through it. It's automatic, re-quiring little or no attention and is priced in line with other mod-ern appliances. Soft water also lets dishes dry themselves to a sparkle. It washes laundry snow-whit-e, soft and fluffy without bleaches. And it prevents rock-lik- e scale in water heaters and piping. The Permutit, people say that any water problem can be cor-rected just as easily "irony" water, corrosiveness, bad taste or odor. They recommend a wa-ter analysis to determine the ex-act trouble. It can be made free ,of charge in Permutit's Labo-ratory country's largest. i HOUSEKEEPING 4 rrunnrrur- - mi I In the tricky business of try-ing to convince a balky husband, the all-import- thing- - is The Approach. Whether you're trying to wheedle theatre tickets, a fur coat, or, as in my case, a new range. The Approach must be developed to a fine art. The art Is in knowing which method will toest apply to your particular brand of husband. Take the case of the hoped-fo- r range. Approach 1 (recom-mended in only a few cases where a favorite spouse loves to cook and is half-wa- y convinced to be-gin with): "This old range is a wreck. Isn't it about time we got & new one?" Approach 2 (for the man who takes pride in his technical know-how- ): "Will you explain something to me, dear ? Y o u r ' r e so clever about these things. Whirlpool has ' a new electric range with controls that pinpoint the right heat with a gliding light. Can you imagine? And It has infinite heat on all four burners plus the plug-i- n griddle. I low can they possibly, etc., etc?" Approach 3 (positively guar-anteed for the gourmet). Some night after a dinner of wieners and beans draw mouth-waterin- g word pictures of a standing rib, roasted to perfection, ducks, ca-pons, barbecued ribs, shish-ka-bo- b, foods you never dared to try. Then deftly slip in the fact that the new electric range you have your eye on features an automa-tic rotisserie, an automatic bar-ib-kew- er, even an automatic bas-t- er which combine to produca unheard of delicacies. Approach 4 (This is for die-har- ds who think a wood-burnin- g stove is rather snappy. This method will take a little longer and may be hard on your reputa-tion, but it's worth it). Over a period of time manage to burn a few favorite dishes, jump up and down so your cake will certainly fall, see to it that not everything finishes cooking at the samo time. When the complaints be-gin coming in, you have him trapped. Throw yourself on his mercy and mention the new range with the built-i-n food guide which dials the right time and temperature for 82 main dishes! If none of the above works, try a combination of several. If he continues to be unmoved, either give up, study the approach prob-lem more closely, or be philo-sophical and congratulate your-self on having a mate who can-not be swayed by fire or flood!
