Show B P W S dream of a double tennis court in the city park realized combined efforts of club viola iola harmston townspeople band and NV W PA P A builds tennis court tor for city in september 1935 the roosevelt business and professional club sensed the me need for a place of recreation and activity in the city for adults as well as children after some investigation they found that a t tennis ennis court would be a project more within their means than any kind hind of a building and make a s tudy study of the expenses incurred in the building of a double tennis court As various reports and statistics were gathered the project tool shape and it was believed that with the use of funds th the club could sponsor the project foi a cost of the ground being donated by the city with the city as a taxing unit a W P A project application was drawn up and plans were made to accumulate funds the twenty three members of the club put their heads together for the purpose of raising 2 in order that the court could be built in the spring and summer of 1936 in march and april of 1936 the group with viola harmston in charge sponsored a series of amateur night programs which as well as netting the tennis court fund brought to light some very unusual and excellent talent application submitted in april 1936 the group felt that they were now ready to submit the project and viol harmston head of the tenni court committee bee jordan an cliff angus went to provo where the application was submitted a the office there the rep of the club and mr air angus were very cordially re and pron promised ased action at once however at this point it seemed that reports had estimated the cost of the double tennis court extremely low and it looked as if the cash outlay of the club would run around instead of the figured on the girls were not discouraged and felt that by some means they would be able to raise the additional delay and disappointment but delay and disappointment dogged the heels of the project after waiting several weeks witt biti no word from the provo office viola harmston and J 0 orser made another trip to provo i personally investigate the progress of the application they were i PROJECT BU ILDER w aea I 1 v I 1 viola harmston promised that work would begin immediately on the tennis courts but found that the cost of the project had been raised making the sponsors share an labor the osti estl mate looked beyond the reach of i the club however the included yards of sand and gravel and allowed for re enforcing steel these mrs mrs harmston felt would be donated and urged the club ot continue its fight for the project just at this time the provo office sent word that until the road work and liver fluke projects jec t s underway here were completed there would be no available workers for the tennis court i project so once again the club was vas forced to mark time application progresses to increase the amount of funds for the project the club sponsored a carnival dance at victory park this was held i in august of 1936 0 of the proceeds roc eeds of this affair was added to the tennis court fund tired of delay a group from the club consisting of viola HarT harmston bee jordan anne warnock and elva mclea went to provo in september to see if the project could now go forth they found the application had made some progress it was now in the sall sail lake city office the corn cittee followed it to salt lake where they found all officials agreeable and returned home with the understanding that work would finally begin but still no men appeared gravel haul the club got busy however and on two different saturdays made drives for gravel under the direction of mrs harmston committees wore were organized and the he help of townspeople and the high school solicited twelve trucks owned by citizens of the town were contributed for use during the two days some of them making two trips and business houses of the city contributed the sum of to pay for the gas and oils used by the boys from the high school did the shoveling at the gravel pit and club women cooked a hot lunch both days and took to them fifty yards of gravel was thus laid at t the city park for a cost of floo ao 10 per yard after more telephone calls to kluvo provo and salt lake and an interview with congressman abe murdock and governor henry H blood the project really started late in october cold weather set in and the the clubs better judgement jud gement was to wait until spring but had ordered the cement to be run running the cement in cold weather incurred an additional expense dense requiring wood for heating both cement and water and paper straw and tarps carps to keep the cement from freezing when it was poured these items cost the club an additional and to cover the deficit each member was assessed abo the cement was finished on december ift 1936 and the ba back ck guards and net poles will be set up as soon as weather permits all around the tennis coults have proved to be a much larger project than the club anticipated and although final figures are not in the club has spent up to date in cash in addition to about 00 being donated for sand and gravel for re enforcing steel and for stor age donated by the peppard seed company the rc re enforcing steel was secured from the old lake fork power company building through the courtesy of the uintah powei and light company A dream come true thus for over a year and a half the entire efforts of the club have been concentrated on the building and completion of the double tennis court in the city park and the enthusiasm courage and ability of viola harmston the assistance of and the do donations Rations so kindly made by the citizens and business houses of the city will make the clubs dream of a double tennis court in the city park a reality this spring |
