of lat ter day saints commonly known as the mormons cormons Mor mons will observe the one hundredth anniversary of the organization of their church in a celebration which Is to begin sunday april 6 1930 at salt lake city and which win will last a week tho the cele celebration brition alu be probably the largest religious event ever held in western united states and will attract more people than any other religious gathering in america amerl with the possible exception of the recent eucharistic Euch aristle congress of the roman catholic church in chicago thousands of visitors will attend the major celebration eb ration to be held in salt uke lake that week coming from all over the union from canada and from mexico while re representatives of congregations of the church in foreign lands will also be present dally daily sessions will be held in the great salt lake tabernacle and every evening a pageant will be given there depleting depicting the rise a and nd progress of the church taking part in this pageant will he be a cast of scores and the tabernacle taber e choir of voices heard during the winter ov over er national radio broadcast will slug sing under the direction of prof anthony 0 lund accompanied by the great reat tabernacle organ played by prof tracy Y cannon tills pageant will be repeated nightly until all who desire to see it have seen it the tabernacle will accommodate about each night on the opening day of the celebration april 6 every latter day saint community in the world including ding those in all european Pur countries in north and south america south africa australia new zealand hawaii the south sea islands and the orient will told hold simultaneous gatherings celebrating the anent bont at each of these gatherings will be heard read a message from the presidency of the church in fit order to accomplish this the message will be translated into a score of languages one feature of tills this worldwide world wide celebration will be the illumination by use of huge hood flood lights of the seven temples of the church most ot of these structures are situated on the highest or most prominent parts of the cities in which they stand and when illuminated thus at night will be visible for miles around around these temples are located at salt lake logan mantl and st george utah at mesa ariz cardston bardston Card ston alberta canada and late laie hawaiian islands president heber J grant will be in general charge of the celebrations on april 0 1830 six men assembled on the farm of peter ieter whitmer near fayette in seneca county new york and there formally organized the church of jesus christ of latter day saints the men who signed th the paper which legalized the church as a religious rell ious body in that state were oseph smith jr oliver cowdery hyrum smith peter whitmer jr samuel 11 II smith and david whitmer in december 1830 the founders of the church decided to move to ohio and they settled near kirtland in that state where the first organ nation of a first presidency took place on march 18 1883 with joseph smith as president and sidney odgden and frederick C williams as counselors in june of that year vear the first temple of the cl clur cli was begun at kirtland the history of the church has been one of steady growth and repeated moves westward soca after building the temple at kirtland and the body of the church was moved to the missouri rellon region with headquarters in the town of I 1 nr woo ill III it city which the mormons cormons practically built up themselves and in which they erected their
