Show PROGRESS ON THE MOFFAT TUNNEL the moffat tunnel which will pierce the continental divide on the route ot of the victory highway in colorado Is now about one third completed construction began sep september 1923 and from the present rate of progress the tunnel will be opened to traffic in 1928 the boro bore iii rulles miles long and pierces james peak at an elevation 0 of feet work is conducted simultaneously from both sides and crews are now in over a mile from each portal the method of construction requires that enlargement of the tunnel to finished section 16 feet wide and 24 feet high continue at a rate that will advance it not nearer than 2000 feet to tho the breast ot of the bore paralleling all eling the main tunnel at a distance of 75 feet a pilot bore 8 feet by 8 feet la Is being driven as an aid to construction and which will be used ultimately in transporting water from the snows of the western slope to denver although required primarily tor for railroad use the line through the tunnel is to be electro fied and automobiles will be taken through on hat flat cars ol of special design desien a small toll charge to be levied tor for this 3 completion ct cf the tunnel will mean an all year motor road into utah by way ot of vernal and duchesne on a route now closed by snows six months out of the bedr year utah highway magazine |
