Show officials of sugar company visit uintah basin CHIEF agriculturist aist FINDS THAT SOIL AND conditions ARK ARE THAT SOME OP OF THE BEST BEETS RAISED IN THE WEST CAN BE GROWN no HERE in company with congressman don B colton and county agent E peterson both of vernal E S of ogden benl in mgr gr ot of the amalgamated sugar co bogn john comer chieft agriculturist for t tho he company sam christensen stensen district manager of cache valley utah and howard H attorney for the company visited every section of the ashley valley thursday and other uintah basin sections on friday of last week manager and the others came here at the invitation of congressman on gressman colton who aked them to come out and look over the ashley valley and uintah basin bashi territory to see it if it was good tor for sugar beet raising after investigation ot of all sections of the valley mr air comer gave it as his opinion that the section was splendidly adapted to raise some ot of the very best sugar beets in the west and desires a test this year of 0 the raising ot of sugar beets in every section arrangements were made with mr peterson and A theodore johnson president of the uintah county farm bureau to distribute some beet seed which mr air comer will send in to a number of 0 farmers ot of uintah county that a test may be made while in roosevelt similar arrangements were made for a test over the reservation section also mr F comer orner stated seed could be planted in in this section to may 20 or even later the plats of beets will be tested for soil irrigation cultivation and the beets analyzed tor for sugar content mr air stated that tor for the successful operation of 0 a sugar factory in the ashley valley or cr any other section of 0 the basin the trans trails por tation problem would have to be solved before sugar factories could be built also that sufficient acreage contracted with proper labor conditions dit ions one of the conditions he mr comer and mr christensen stressed was the importance of crop rotation and sufficient acreage to take care of 0 the factories after they were i built as many hundreds of thousands 0 of dollars was tied up in machinery and factories and they must be in operation each year another thing spoken ct cf was water storage sufficient that a water shortage would be a thing of the past mr colton was more than pleased with the reports made by the agriculturist and that mr air personally made th the investigation of our agricultural conditions in the uintah basin that he would have first hand knowledge from all angles of a territory he feels mr air will be sure 1 to 0 enter just a as soon as transportation of the prop proper kind comes to the basin mr is sure also that a railroad for the basin is not tar far off mr air when in roosevelt on friday was much impressed by the splendid territory surround surrounding ing roosevelt and expressed himself surprised at the immensity of the territory in every section visited and the splendid prospects for acreage tor for various sugar factories in the basin as soon as transportation facilities cili ties permitted the entrance olf capital tor for that purpose mr air said it would be necessary to bring raw land much of which he found in reservation sections to a high state of cultivation before it would be suitable for beet production on one advantage ot of new land is there would be few weed pests and pro proper per tilling of the soil would soon bring the land into a high state of production |
