Show A duchesne mar 31 1925 roosevelt standard roosevelt utah ulah dear editor in the march issue of your paper I 1 noticed an article entitled fish hogs As I 1 wag mas born a fisherman raised a fisherman and am still fishing this interested me very much I 1 most heartily agree with you that we have some individuals in duchesne Du chesno county whom I 1 call lazy fishermen men who 11 t pep enough to catch a mess of fish honestly but will resort to some foul means which causes the least energy on their part to satisfy the fish appetite such fellows should be ba made a public example our laws must be more severe in handling such characters however there are other fish hogs in this basin which should occupy our attention I 1 refer canals and irrigation lr ditches last year there were more fish wasted through this source than all the fishermen in this basin would catch in tive five years the other day a farmer in thle basin informed me that at one time last season the fish became so nu meraus in his canal that he was forced to take his wagon and haul them to the river any farmer will tell you that it Is not unusual to find quantities of fish in their head ditches and or of course they dont see one per cent of them the early settlers in the basin will testify that the fish are less than they were years past their decrease la Is not due to what few that have been caught by fishermen but the canals in my estimation are responsible most alost of 0 our streams are entirely drained by the canals and as the ish fish naturally drift with the stream commencing in july and continuing on oil through the late summer they stall fall victims to the canals where never one escapes this is true with both large and small it Is possible to stop the greater part of the waste by simply placing fish screens at the head intakes of 0 these canals of course many ot of the owners of 0 these canals will object to this as it will cost a small amount to place the screens and also will require some attention to keep them clean so as not to hinder binder the water flow yet it if these owners could only understand that there would mould be fish enough saved in one year to pay ten told fold tor for the placing ot of the screens and keeping them clean they surely could not object to this saving I 1 should like to see an organization effected in this basin tor for the protection ot of the fish and game which at present in most parts are P plentiful lenti ful but will soon be extinct unless something is done to prevent their extermination yours respectfully JO JOHN P MADSEN |
