Show the colorado river project t in the following general review of 0 the irrigation and water power pos ties in utah prepared for the th state realty association rau rail utah state realty association tion ralf rail logical survey emphasizes the im of irrigation to the indus trial and business life of the comma anity his article follows the most potent factor in the development of our resources in the arid st states ates Is water supply the development 0 of power the extension ot of agriculture and grazing the growth of 0 mineral industries transportation and all kinds of civic civic improvements depend directly upon the quantity and quality of the underground and surface waters agriculture Is the foundation fou nation on aich the industries of our intermountain states are huilt built and which without irrigation our most productive areas would be worthless wastes it is obvious therefore that our in du dusl rial growth will continue only as a result of the increased utilization of our water resources or in other words the increasing of our tool fool producing areas problems are large reclamation like ether other forms of development has followed the line of least resistance and the time has now arrived when all of the small relatively inexpensive projects have hava been developed and the natural low water flow of most of the smaller is appropriated accordingly further development must utilize the flood flow of 0 the streams by conservation in storage reservoirs and many of the problems now to he be corsi considered dered are not only of interstate but ot of national importance in many cases they are of such magni tude that only by the united efforts of state and federal governments will they even be built an outstanding example of such a problem is the utilization of colorado river and its tributaries tributa ries here the interests of several states are involved along with those of the federal government and the question is f a rational issue green r river project t in 1915 tile the united states reclamation service entered into a cooperative agreement with the state of wyoming to make an investigation of the irrigation possibilities in the cicen river basin in wyoming the green grcen river is one of the most impost impo po t tributaries tributa ries of the colorado tho the results of this study show tha over acre feet or about abou 47 per cent of the total average annual supply or ol the colorado goes to the sea on an average acra feet beet per annum or 14 per cent cen of the total average runoff run off originates in wyoming and leaves the state after all existing users are arc sats satisfied fied the reservoir sites available in this basin in wyoming have a i storage capacity or of nearly acre feet and the area possible of irrigation from tills part of the green river shed Is about acres or about as much again as is already being irrigated gall ed in the entire state E C larue of the geological survey 1 v ey in his water supply paper on me colorado river and its utilization indicates the following additional areas that may be irrigated from colorado river and its tributaries tributa ries m n the several states utah acres colorado acres new mexico 0 o acres arizo arizona acres and california I 1 acres including the imperial valley projects figures significant the significance of these figures can better be comprehended perhaps when we say that this would increase the present irrigated area in utah about 60 per cent in colorado 34 per cent new mexico 50 per cent arizona per cent and california 35 pere pe rc ent cut and knowing to some extent the vast potential wealth involved in our present irrigation products it Is not hard to see the erld endless leas possibilities of growth which will follow the extreme development of this o ere e river system As a matter of fact the value to fo increased toed food products from irrigation irrigation in this ono one instance would likely amount to more than annually based on prewar pre war prices another stream which still holds ill hi po poh littles for further utilization is knarp sn hp river in ida idaho 0 fearly early b 1 lie pre et year lu in conformity 4 b h an under anding had b between tho the d r i or of the united states recia reclamation mation service and the govern or of 0 idaho a joint board of engineers was designated to consider projects in the snake river valley ana he following points of interest are eaken from the report of that hoard storing I 1 I 1 folvik tow contemplated T there here are now irrigated about acres of land tn in snake river valley from the water of snake river and il its ls tributaries tributa ries above american falls in addition to this area I 1 a are r e ab about out acres 0 01 are odger r lands popularly considered ir r retable rJ table 1 I e from the same water waier sheea 0 th these ese new areas about cres lie below american falls fails and about acres lie above point aln iu order to attain the maximum of the waters of snake river it Is generally conceded that the tha american falls reservoir site be developed and as this will be ba necessary to build it this will more than double the ae e of 0 the irrigated area la in ana seafie e niver ver valley and increase all indus hal activities in like proportion la in addition to these major pro acts bac each h state his has many sni smaller aller local projects which no doubt wl hii be developed as private enterprises when the demand tor for irrigate ferms farms will warrant their develop mant power given closely associated with the develop nent of a stream tor for irrigation Is lila iha problem of ct water power and this is more particularly true in th sections it has bee estimated by the united states geo loucal survey that tor for a six monti moat period of each year utah has available horsepower per square mile idaho california wyoming and arizona being a total of about liose ho power aud only A fraction 0 this has been developed mr larue in his review of thi th waterpower waier water power resources in the colo r hajto a lo 10 river basin vives gives an installer insl Ins allec caracta of about horsepower in twenty five plants and the tota undeveloped possibilities are esti mod mcd mr at more than horse power on in snake river in idaho about aboul horsepower are available and less than one tenth of tiia tha amount is developed in the great sali lake basin where the most in water power development r the be intermountain inter region has iee deer made there are approximately titia hydroelectric power plants with a to tal installed capacity of nearly I 1 horsepower and the resO urcer yet undeveloped will aggregate alicae horsepower the lenir leall d for power is even now taxing tho the developed supply and additional t i developments are in an urgent need kow ow when you stop slop to consider that the reclamation of the desert v in the arid states is directly responsible for the present vast agricultural ri wealth the numerous indus ries the rapid increase in population and in fact all develop development meni and business activities and with these few generalities before us it is not difficult to conceive what the results will abe e when the problem of maximum utilization of our water resources hits has been solved and not oila the arid states but the entire nation shares in the attending prosperity |
