Show LESS TAXES AND ECONOMY the federal government has enacted into law the principle that investors in railroad securities are entitled to a fair return on their investment over and above ther the cost ot of operation including corporate taxes this was done because the government de determines what the railroads shall charge tor for rendering transportation service to io the people many ofus of us used to thank and apparently patently ly a few state executives still think that by increasing public utility taxes extravagance and wasteful practices in public office offic emay may prevail without cost to the people overlooking the fact baci that every every dollar paid by corporations tor for takes must come ou of the pockets of the people in other words if I 1 railroad and public utility taxes be increased this the burden Is shifted back on the people by an increase in freight or passenger rates or charges tor for service it Is passing strange that at a time when ax atlon la Is a burden one at a time when public expenses should be cut to the quick ani and extravagance trava gance wiped put out soine or of those in public office charged with ille he duty of administration instead of looking for or opportunities to economize econ mize are adverting adv eating both increased taxation of property already overtaxed over taxed and the raising of additional revenue from new sources it Is time for courageous thought and action the people are groaning under the weight of adversity from various causes they are III prapai ed to stand additional burdens incompetence and extravagance in public office must be eliminated not a dollar should be taken from taxpayers above that required to maintain the government gover nent of the municipality county state and nation n honestly and economically administered those invested with public authority from governor to road supervisor should be made to realize that this Is no time tor for increased burdens but rather that they will be held to strict account for ral litre to avail of e every opportunity to increase efficiency chency and reduce the cost of government ern ment it is said of the politician that he Is the only animal known to zoology that can lay both ears to the ground ht at the ibe same time with this advantage let us hope that he will at least hear if not heed the rumblings gs or discontent and the appeals for from an all overburdened over burdened populace bewildered wll wil dered and distressed alike by the incompetence and extravagance of public servants the rhe demand of the hour Is neither increased taxation nor new sources of revenue but retrenchment and ana economy in public expenditures |
