Show 0 GO TO COLLEGE I 1 many a 1918 high school gra graduate d is debating with himself this year shall I 1 go to college or shall I 1 eulist enlist at once for military service the war department has just made it possible to do both it says in effect to the ambitious young american you serve your country by going to college to make sure that you do not lose thereby the opportunity ot of serving your country in a direct military capacity 3 ion on will be asked to join the special U S army college training units that are to be formed formed you will be liable tor for service at a moments notice but because you are worth more to the nation with your college training than without it you will be expected to stay in college until called by the government the war departments announcement provides that beginning with september 1918 military instruction under officers and noncom non com officers of the army will be provided in every institution ot of college grade enrolling tor for the instruction st one hundred or more able bodied students over the age ot of the nece equipment will lie provided by the government there will be created a military training unit in each institution i sti ution enlistment will bo be purely voluntary but all students over the age ot of eighteen will be encouraged to enlist the enlistment will constitute the student a member ot of the army ot of the united st states ates liable to active duty duly at the call ot of tile the dent it wilf however lie be the policy ot of the hie government not to call the members ot of the training units to active duty until they have reached the age ot of twenty one unless urgent military necessity compels an earlier call students under eighteen and therefore not legally eligible for enlistment list ment will be encouraged to enroll in the training units provision will ill be made madeford ma defor for coordinating the reserve Offic officers training corps tern lem which exists in about one third of the colf collegiate glate institutions with tills this broader li plan this new policy alms to accomplish a twofold two fold object the war department announces first fl to develop as a great military asset alv the large body of young men in the col leges egos and second to prevent unnecessary and wasteful depletion of the colleges through indiscriminate volunteering by offering ott ering to the atu btu students a definite nite and immediate military status no nation lias has made such generous provision lor for combined military and college education as has the united states in this sew new plan the youth who avail themselves of 0 the privilege will lie be serving their count rys immediate as well as future needs |
