Show HISTORY HIS TUrRY OF H DL the uintah basin was thrown I 1 open to white settlers n the yeo year of 1905 the first settlers at 1 hertford were mr air J W gibboney anil ani a widow wid ow I 1 urs mrs lockhart Lo ekhart mr Gib gibboney lioney built the first building that was built in hartter i it was a small square house built ot of rocks in which lie be lived the house is not standing now but was built one halt hall mile east cast of the present school building mrs lockhart bult built the second cabin that was hullt in Il hartford artford the two together came here in ili the year of 0 1905 my grandfather gazon gagon uncle joe gagon and my father ira D gagon came here and settled just about six months after Gib boneys and mrs lockhart Lo ekhart came the first irrigation ditch was the dry gulch the dit ditch eh was built by the dry gulch irrigator Irrig aton company my father was foreman of the works the six or seven families were settled aled here but later the federal government and new hope people made ditches and laterals literals late rals through the country papa was wai headman head man on the water wagon two years prior to the building of tile the ditch ile he had a b pair of f mustang ponies and a good switch after the ditch was built there was v very ery little raised but gardens tor for the first year but today there are large crops of hay beets corn wheat barley oats beans and all kinds of vegetables raised here when the first settlers came hero here hay w was from twenty five to thirty five dollars per ton and had to be hauled from vernal forty miles miles irom from here mr A W and mr gibboney brought the first cattle cattie and horses into this country nearly all the settlers had a start of chickens Gib boneys Ni elsons and roberts berts brought a start of pigs into this country M H roberts il brought rought a large larga number of 0 turkeys there are now large droves of registered cattle sheep and goats into thiis this country irl in so well as three dairy farms my uncle will gagon lias some of 0 the best goats in the aint uintah all basin we now have a favorite country to many I eople because hartford 3 situa situated teI in a valley lust just between two of the leading towns 0 of tho the basin myton and roosevelt you can buy dry gooda goods and all kinds of other things we have a large high school build ing ng in one no 0 of the I 1 towns 0 ans and n d in the other you can sell cream of bany any amount our school building 13 right in fil the center of 0 the hartford town site the first school in hartford was held field in mr J A house when he had moved to cleber tills this school was war held in the year of 1910 and we had enrolled twenty students the first year with only one teacher mr frank watkins the follow following ng spring mr air myler came back and we had to move the school into mr colletts little log cabin it is ono one block east from the present school building mrs Gib gibboney borley taught school the second year mr edward watkins taught the third year miss duke taught the fourth year anu ana mr F loyd floyd E lamb taught school the fifth year about abou tone one third of the time in mr colletts hou seand then mr palmer and some other men built the new nev school house and he be taught the next two following years sn n the new school house and then mr palmer and some other men built the new school house and the third year mr lamb taught mlis miss pack taught the lower grad grades es now we have our sunday school primaries jances dances and nd all kinds pt ot other other pleasures ln in the new school sali ool house tills this year mr J 0 brookbank and his wife are ie teaching aching we have enrolled now thirty FY six students and hope to have more written by a student of the sixth grade MISS INI MAt tOLINE ADOLINE GAGON age ll 11 years |
